Show Composite Majors EARTH SCIENCE TEACHING MAJOR Description: A degree in Earth Science is designed primarily to prepare teachers for employment in elementary and high schools. Education: Earth Science combines the study of astronomy, biology, geography, geology, mathematics, meteorology, environmental science, physics and chemistry under the unified heading of Earth Sciences. Weber State College has recently developed an innovative environmentally oriented program for earth science which has improved teacher quality in the field. Employment Outlook: With the stress on the environment today, there has been a great increase in the demand for high school earth science teachers in the United States in recent years. Graduates from Weber State have found employment in their field of specialization upon graduation without exception. The assessment is that the need for teachers of earth science will continue to be great. Related Careers: Conservation, environmental impact studies, land use planning, government employment, in such fields as forest service and Bureau of Land Management. Program: Earth Science Composite Teaching Major Bachelor Degree I. General Requirements: A. Specific course requirements of the college (see index). B. Bachelor Degree General Education requirements (see index). Psychology 101 (5) in the Social Science area is recommended for Earth Science Composite Teaching majors. C. A minor is not required. D. Earth Science Composite Teaching majors must have a C or better in major courses. E. Earth Science Composite Teaching majors must achieve an overall 2.25 G. P. A. F. 183 total hours are required for this degree. G. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). H. Students obtaining an Earth Science Composite Teaching major must satisfy the School of Education Certification Program (see Teacher Education Program). These courses must include the following: Education 195 (1), 300 (3), 350 (3), 363 (3), 364 (4), 495 (15), 499 (5). II. Specific Requirements: A. Minimum of 72 credit hours. B. Courses required: Geology 111 (4) and 112 (1) or 101 (5) and 112 (1); 121 (4), 122 (5), 275 (5); 295 (4) and/or 495 (4): Geography 113 (4), 305 (4); two of the following: Geology 254 (4), 306 (4), 315 (4), 318 (4); Physics 101 (5) or 111 (4) and 114 (1); 103 (5); Botany 110 (5), 140 (3); Zoology 160 (5); Chemistry 111 (5); Mathematics 105 (5). C. Courses recommended: Geology 341 (3), 363 (4), 376 (4), 406 (4); Geography 340 (3); Botany 221 (5), 341 (4). D. Support course required: Communication 102 (3). 50 Composite Majors Program: English and Communication Composite Teaching Major (English Emphasis)Bachelor Degree I. General Requirements: A. B. Communication 1. Minimum of 35 credit hours of Communication courses. 2.
