Show Women's intramurals for 1935-36 were popular. Through the stimulus of widespread participation in many activities, women's athletics advanced considerably though the officials found it difficult, in some instances, to avoid conflict in scheduling the gym floor. Clubs and major groups united into organizations and sponsored teams which cooperated willingly with the officers and honored the ideals of sportsmanship. TENNIS The intramurals opened in the latter part of the autumn quarter with a closely contested tennis tourney. Nearly every organization claimed its hundred points for entrance. Through the whole of this tournament, Education and Otyokwa kept contestants in every round, finally sending Mary Hienen and Phyllis Barker to a final match. The contest was won by Mary, and Education went into the lead. SQUASH BALL Following tennis came the squash ball tournament. After the interest aroused in the preceding tourney, it was not hard to make this one of the most popular events of the season. This contest, like its predecessor, was entered by contestants who held no hope of winning but desired the fun and wished to give their group the hundred entrance credits. This lively interest was manifest in the final match, more evenly and more vigorously contested than the tennis joust. The championship was won by Irma Langford of La Dianaeda in a four-round set against Phyllis Barker, who represented Otyokwa. CHECKERS With interest well stimulated by tennis and squash ball, checkers proved a popular event. Finding the meet somewhat of a novelty, numerous teams entered the competition. The Home Economics team, comprised of Grace Pass, Myrene Thomas, and Adella Kendall, won first place. The consolation contest was taken by the Humanities when the two final games were played January 15. SWIMMING The swimming meet was held January 24. Nearly every group entered several contest- ants. The following events were included: Form: breast, side and elementary back strokes. Speed: 20 yard and 40 yard free style, 20 yard breast and back strokes. Diving: Standing, running, and optional dives. 80 yard free style relay. |
