Show Cluster M. Nilsson Marian T. Read David R. Trevithick PUBLICATIONS AND FORENSICS DIRECTORS Marian Read, as acting head of the English Department, is the director of all forensics. All matters affecting dramatics, public speaking, debate, and the literary publications of Weber College have been under her general supervision this year. Miss Read keeps a careful touch upon these activities and cooperates personally in the direction and work of each one. David Trevithick advises and copy and proof reads the College quarterly Scribulus. He introduced this magazine the fall quarter because of the unusual number of persons talented in writing who applied for Acorn positions and would otherwise have been turned away. In debate and oratory, Mr. Trevithick this year took over a task made difficult by the record of previous years and yet maintained the established standards. Cluster Nilsson advises and copy and proof reads the Acorn. In extempore public speaking, Mr. Nilsson has this year developed a fully rounded program. Two "novitiate" tournaments have been added for developing inexperienced speakers and for insuring adequate preparation for the James L. Barker and the J. S. Lewis extempore speaking contests. This year, for the first time, Weber College won Utah and Idaho in this event. The Weber College Utah High School Debate tournament has been under Mr. Nilsson's direction since its inception three years ago. Trevithick, Weber debaters continued their success in forensics. The season was not so rich as other years in number of contests entered, but the results of all meets were gratifying. Individual inter- school contests were held with seven other institutions, and seven teams were entered in the Utah-Idaho Forensics League against the representatives of ten other intermountain colleges. The question treated was "Resolved: That Congress should be permitted to override, by a two-thirds majority vote, decisions of the Supreme Court invalidating acts of Congress." CALIFORNIA TRIP On February 16, Mr. Trevithick and two debate teams-one composed of Marian Wilson and Wanda Welling, the other made up of Toyse Kato and Grant Burton-left for California to meet Pasadena, Glendale, and Compton junior colleges. Two matches with Pasadena Junior College were held on February 18. One match was non-decision; the other was decided in Weber's favor. The meet scheduled with Compton for February 19 did not materialize; so the group spent that day at the San Diego Exposition. In a dual meet with the University of Southern California on February 20, Weber was twice victorious. The last contests were class decision debates with Glendale Junior College on February 21. Weber lost one and tied the other. |
