Show ORVAL CARSTENSON Athletic Manager MALCOLM WATSON Coach VARD L. TANNER Assistant BASKETBALL ONCE MORE WEBER takes her place as the state high school champions in baske:ball. In spite of the facts that the fellows began their training later than usual and that their work was seriously interrupted by the "flu," Male's team played speedy, consistent ball. More interest than usual was shown in the class series. The four teams worked hard, but found it easy because of much support and enthusiasm from their classmates. When the series ended the Sophomores, backed by "Shanty" Lindsay, held first place. During these games Coach Watson had been spotting his men for the school team. He finally chose "Tiny" Jones for center, Schade and Belnap for forwards, Jeppson and Lind- say, guards, and Critchlow and Wiggins, substitutes. Each fellow was a "whiz" in his position. The first league game of this half of the northern division was played with the Ogden High on their floor and we beat them in "the usual way," the score being 41 to 18. The next two games with the State School for the Deaf and the Davis County High were "walk aways" for Weber, the scores being piled up to more than three times those of our oppo- nents. Box Elder High was not such a snap, but our boys fought hard and defeated them by a score of 13 to 6. We won the championship of the southern half of the northern di- vision when Brigham played her return game. She came down, backed by her whole stu- dent body, determined to "get" Weber. The college auditorium was packed-many root- ers having to be turned away. Both teams showed good form, but we defeated them 31 to 21. On March 14 the team, with 200 students, went to Brigham to meet and defeat the B. Y. C. We accomplished both-the final count was 34 to 19. This gave us first place in the northern division. With absolute confidence in Watson and the team, we went to the state tournament, determined to "bring home the bacon." We met our first defeat of the season on March 20 when we played the Branch A. C. The game was most intense-the two teams were tied till the last five minutes, when B. A. C. shot three baskets. The next night we easily defeated Bingham. After the game the officials of the tournament decided that as Weber and the B. A. C. were the strongest teams, they should meet Saturday night to fight for the championship. Just before the game Saturday after- noon, President Moss announced that B. A. C. had refused to play Weber again, giving as a reason that she had already defeated her. Before the tournament began the coaches, representing their teams and schools, had agreed to abide by the decisions of the stats officials, and when Branch A. C. refused to play they were necessarily ruled out. This left four teams standing on an equal basis, each having lost one game. Satur- day Bingham defeated Springville, and our boys defeated Wasatch. Monday we played Bingham and captured the state title. Male and his team are certainly to be congratulated, for besides receiving the pen- nant, Jones, Jep and Ken were given places on the all-state team, while Rosey and Shanty received honorable mention. Eighty BASEBALL THE CLASS GAMES THIS year were some of the best ever played at Weber. The Sophomores ('21) won the inter-class championship by defeating the Juniors 9 to 8. The results of the class games were: Sophomores..........19 Sophomores..........10 Freshmen...........3 Seniors............4 Juniors ...........17 Freshmen...........11 Seniors............4 Seniors............7 juniors ...........9 Sophomores..........9 Freshmen...........5 Juniors............8 From the class teams the following school team was chosen, and it played good ball throughout the season: Captain, Cliff Doxey (p); Bonesy Jones (2b); Bunny Newman (ss); Rosey Belnap (lb); Jit Critchlow (3b); Phil Jeppson (of); Ken Farley (rf); Lemon Lin- ford (If); Vern Hill (cf); Vern Gibbs (p); Johnny Price (c). For the first time Weber won the championship of the northern division by defeating the Ogden High, Davis High, State Industrial school, and the State School for the Deaf. We played the East Side High from Salt Lake for the state cham- pionship, but were defeated by the superior playing of the fast East Side team. The scores were: Weber............16 Weber............12 State Industrial......... 1 Davis High..........5 Weber............16 Weber............6 School for Deaf........3 Davis High..........5 Weber.....12 East Side...........15 Ogden High..........8 Weber............7 East Side...........11 Weber............0 TENNIS THE SOPHOMORES WON ANOTHER inter-class championship by de- feating the Juniors after four hard played sets-7-5, 9-7, 6-4, 7-5. Weber took no part in track this year because there was no place to work out. We hope some day to be able to have track because we have some fine material in the school and are sure we could make other schools sit up and take notice. Our athletics this year have been very successful. This is due first, to the fine support they received from the students and, second, because we had a fine bunch of fellows who worked all the time and trained hard the whole season. But the main reason, though Watson does not mention it in his report, is our invaluable hard-working coach, who has won the friendship of the boys so much that one word from him is all that is necessary to accomplish an object. |
