Show Economics Logistics • General Information 340. Labor Economics (4) A Historical development and growth of unionism and labor legislation. Analysis of wages, wage theory, collective bargaining, and labor-management relations. Prerequisite: 202. Econ 341. Women in the World Economy (4) Application of the principles of economics to the analysis of problems and issues confronting women in the modem global economy, with special emphasis on labor markets, income differentials, and problems faced by women in developing economies. Prerequisite: Econ 202. 364. Environmental Economics (4) Analysis of public and private approaches to resource allocation and the management of the nation's environmental resources with special emphasis on public goods, i.e., forests, wilderness areas, minerals, watercourses. Prerequisites: Econ 202, SS203. ^\ 417. Economic Development (4) The application of economic principles to the challenging problems of third world and developing nations including Africa, ( Asia, Latin America and the newly independent states of the Former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Prerequisites: Econ 202, SS203. 432. Industrial Organization (4) The theory and performance of firms and industries in the context of substantial market power and market regulation. Emphasis on oligopoly, game theory, and theory of markets within the context of global market competition. Prerequisite: Econ 302. 455. Introduction to Econometrics (4) S Advanced regression analysis. Topics include dummy variables, residual analysis, binomial dependent variables, simultaneous equations, and forecasting techniques. Computers will be used extensively although programming skills are not necessary. Prerequisites: Econ 202, SS203; Quant 261. 456. Mathematical Economics (4) Advanced application of mathematical modelling techniques to selected economic issues. Prerequisites: Quant 240, 260, 261; Econ 301, 302. 480. Independent Study (1-6) A, W, S Individual work or work in small groups, by arrangement, in special topics not included in the announced course offerings. Prerequisites: Quant 261 and instructor approval (limited to 2 credit hours per quarter). 492. The Structure and Performance of U.S. Industry (4) Industrial organization, performance, and behavior in high-tech industries. Emphasis on the application of economic principles to understanding the special issues surrounding management of technology. Prerequisites: Econ 202, SS203. IM ECON/QUANTITATIVE COURSES-QUANT The following are service courses which are designed for major and minor programs in the College of Business and Economics. 240. Quantitative Analysis for Business and Economics (4) Su, A, W, S Emphasis on applications of quantitative tools to problems in business. Topics include profit maximization, cost functions, demand analysis, and output maximization with budget constraints and resource allocation. Prerequisite: Math 107 with a C or higher grade or equivalent as determined by the Math Department. 2jjO^Sfatistical Analysis I (4) Su, A, W, S Introduction to concepts and applications of statistics in business and economics. Topics include summary statistics, probability distributions of random variables, sampling, and estimation. Class will include use of computers. Prerequisite: Math 107 with a C or higher grade or equivalent as determined by the Math Department. 261. Statistical Analysis II (4) Su, A, W, S Continuation of Quant 260. Topics include test of hypotheses, correlation, time series, and multiple regression analysis. Computers will be used extensively in regression analysis. Prerequisites: Quant 240 and 260. CENTER FOR ECONOMIC EDUCATION The Department has established a Center for Economic Education. Its basic function is to help educators in secondary and elementary schools improve their understanding and knowledge of economics. This will assist them in providing their students with the fundamental economic tools needed to evaluate complex national and international events that are a part of their daily existence. PROGRAM: ECONOMICS TEACHING MINOR General Requirements: • A grade of 2.5 or better in minor courses. Specific Requirements: (minimum of 30 credit hours): • Required courses (14 credit hours): Econ SSI01 (5), 202 (4), SS/SB274 (5). • Elective courses (10 credit hours): Courses must be approved by department chair prior to taking the courses. • Support courses required (6 credit hours): Commun HU102 (3) or its equivalent and Educ 450 (3). The Theory of the Firm (4) The pricing process under various market structures within the framework of an enterprise system of economic organization. (Designed for teachers.) 511. International Trade and Business (4) A survey of international economic relations, problems, and policies. (Designed for teachers.) 520. The U. S. Monetary System (4) A survey of the monetary and banking system of the United States. (Designed for teachers.) 535. Government and the Free Enterprise System (4) A survey course that examines the role and impact of governmental institutions and policies upon the private sector of the economy. (Designed for teachers.) 574. Economic Approach to U. S. History (4) The impact of economic factors upon the growth and development of the United States. (Designed for teachers.) Russell Description Logistics involves the efficient flow of materials and products into, through, and out of the firm. The logistics curriculum provides comprehensive coverage of the basic principles of purchasing, materials management, inventory planning and control, transportation and distribution, and customer service. Students are also taught methods and techniques for the logistical support of a system, e.g., a fleet of aircraft, a line of related products, or an atomic energy plant. The undergraduate logistics degree prepares students for a wide range of careers in purchasing, contract administration, inventory management, warehousing, distribution, transportation management, logistics planning, and other related fields. Every attempt is made in scheduling logistics courses to accommodate both the traditional day student and the working professional who seeks a degree in logistics through night classes. LOGISTICS COURSES-LOG 110. Oral and Written Communications (5) Provides information about the nature of effective oral and written communications. Involves the student in activities to improve listening, reading, writing, and speaking. 205. Introduction to Logistics (4) Survey course of methods and strategies of business logistics including physical supply and physical distribution. Topics include materials management, transportation, inventory, warehousing, distribution channels, customer service, logistics strategies, and more. 230. Defense Procurement Management (4) An overview of procurement activity within the federal government. Subject matter will include the organization of a defense procurement agency, the procurement cycle, regulatory considerations and trends and non-market characteristics of the defense industry. 272. Distribution and Traffic Management (4) A study of the industrial traffic department and the application of transportation management principles to the reduction of transportation costs.
