PROGRAM: PHYSICAL SCIENCE/ MATHEMATICS/COMPUTER SCIENCE COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: • WSU Core Requirements (see index). • General Education Requirements (see index). • Psych SSI01 (5) in the Social Science area is recommended for Physical Science/Mathematics/Computer Science Composite Teaching majors. • A minor is not required. • Physical Science/Mathematics/Computer Science Composite Teaching majors must have a C or better in major courses. • An overall GPA of 3.00 and admission to the Teacher Education Program. (See admission requirements to Teacher Education.) Note: Educ 300 and 400 classes are open only to students admitted to Teacher Education. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). • Students obtaining one of the Physical Science/ Mathematics/Computer Science Composite Teaching majors must satisfy the College of Education Certification Program (see Secondary Education Program). These courses must include the following: Educ 195 (1), 300 (2), 301 (4), 303 (3), 305 (3), 316 (3), 462 (4), 463 (4), 495 (12), 499 (3). • Support courses required: Educ 365 (3); choose one of the following: Chfam SSI50 (5), Psych 314 (3), Chfam 450 (3). Specific Requirements: • Students must complete a minimum of 72 credit hours from the areas listed below. Two or more areas of emphasis must be selected, and the listed required courses for each selected emphasis area must be completed. Course work beyond the emphasis requirements but counting toward the 72 credit total may be selected from the optional course list for each selected emphasis area, or from the entire course list of non-emphasis areas. The selected areas of emphasis will be identified on the official student records. • Chemistry courses required (28 hours): Chem PS 121 (5), 122 (5), 123 (5), 213 (5), 311 (4), and 312 (4). Optional courses: Chem 301 (4), 307 (5) and 313 (4). • Geology courses required (30 hours): PS 111 (5), 112 (1), 113 (1), 121 (4) and 122 (5); two courses chosen from the following list: Geol 306 (4), 315 (4), 318 (4), or 376 (4). Remaining courses to make up the required 30 hours can be selected from the previous list or from Geol 254 (4), 275 (5), 295 (1-8), 308 (4), 325 (5), 339 (3), 363 (4), 385 (4), 388 (4), 406 (3), 483 (2), or 495 (1-8). No more than 4 credit hours of the 30 hours total can be taken from 295 (1-8) and/or 495 (1-8). • Mathematics courses required (36 hours): Math 200 (1),211 (5), 212 (5), 213 (5), 241 (4), 310 (3), 312 (3), 325 (3), 416 (4); MathEd 301 (3). Optional courses: Math 321 (3), 331 (3), 371 (4), 421 (3), 461 (4). • Physics courses required (25 hours): Phsx PS261 (4), 262 (4), 263 (4), PS264 (1), 265 (1), 266 (1) and 10 hours from the following upper division physics courses: 316 (4), 317 (4), 318 (4), 319 (4), 320 (4), 341 (4), 342 (4), 343 (4), 350 (5), 351 (4), 352 (4), 364 (1), 365 (1), 366 (1), 461 (4), 462 (4), 463 (4). Please see department for recommended course of study. • Computer Science courses required (27 hours): Comsci PD101 (4) or Beas PD170 (4); Educ 320 (3); Comsci 140 (4), one additional language course selected from Comsci 130 (4), 220 (4), 160 (4), 225 (4), or IS&T 220 (4); Comsci 265 (4); select one course from Comsci 275 (4), 266 (4), 302 (4), or 310 (4); select one additional upper division course in Comsci from the optional course list. Exceptions must be approved in advance by the Composite Coordinator. • To complete a support area in Economics, a student must take Econ 202 and 203 and select at least two of the following courses: Econ 274, 311, 312, 320, 340, 341. • Courses completed at other collegiate institutions may be used to fulfill program requirements after approval by the Composite Coordinator. At least one course in each area (including the major) must be taken at Weber State. • After declaring the Composite major, a student should meet with the Composite Coordinator to establish the courses to be taken as part of the program. • Transcripts and a Graduation Evaluation form should be submitted to the Composite Coordinator for review before student teaching or graduation approval forms will be signed. Specific Requirements: • The Social Science Composite Teaching major consists of an academic major in one of the following three areas: Geography, History, Political Science (see index for program). • As well as the above major, a total of 45 credit hours in three of the academic disciplines listed in areas 1 and 2 below. At least one of the three concentrations must be from those listed in area 1 and different from the area chosen as a major. A minimum of fourteen credit hours approved by the Social Science Composite Teaching major adviser must be completed in each of the three areas of concentration. Courses taken to meet this requirement may also be used to satisfy General Education area requirements if appropriate. Area 1 - Geography, History, Political Science. Science Concepts for Elementary Teachers (4) Su,A, W,S A survey of general science concepts taught in the elementary school. 280. The Problem Solving Process and Structure of Media Centers (3) Minor is not currently being offered. 289. Cooperative Work Experience (1-9) Su, A., W, S For students not yet accepted to the Teacher Education Program who meet the minimum cooperative work experience requirements of the department. Provides academic credit for on- the-job experience. Amount of credit will be determined by the department. 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) Consult the quarterly class schedule for the current offering under this number. The specific title and credit authorized will appear on the student transcript. May be taken on a Credit/No Credit basis. *300. Interpersonal Skills for Teachers (2) Su, A, W, S Experiences intended to develop basic skills in personal interaction and adaptation to teaching. Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education. To be taken concurrently with Educ 301. *301. Teaching and Learning Processes (4) Su, A, W, S Modules on fundamental concepts and processes related to human behavior and learning as they apply to instructional planning and student motivation. Field experience required. Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education. To be taken concurrently with Educ 300. *302. Instructional Planning (1) Su, A, W,S For Early Childhood majors. Module on lesson planning. Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education. To be taken concurrently with Educ 300. *303. Instructional Technology (3) Su, A, W, S Modules on the basic concepts, techniques, and applications of media materials and computers in the classroom. Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education. Must be enrolled in or have completed Educ 300 and Educ 301. *305. Current School Topics (3) A, W, S Modules on school health, cultural pluralism, evaluation and current reform practices. Prerequisite: Educ 301 and admission to Teacher Education. *306. Reading Methods (6) A, W, S Modules on the nature of reading, approaches to teaching reading, reading readiness, word recognition, comprehension, and assessment. Field experience required. Prerequisite: Educ 301. *308. Language Arts Methods (3) A, W, S Modules on teaching handwriting, spelling, listening, oral communication, and written communication. Field experience required.
