Show • Distance Learning Programs Special Programs C1. General Information & Capacity Requirements Planning, Just-In-Time, Inventory Management, and Master Planning. All courses are taught by practitioners using instructional materials developed nationally by APICS and other authors. Early College Program Through this program, high school seniors have the opportunity to participate in the university environment while continuing with their high school courses and activities. Currently, 250 students from Davis, Ogden, Weber, Morgan, and Box Elder school districts participate in the Early College Program Travel Study Program In cooperation with the Foreign Languages department, travel study programs have been designed to give students a first hand look at the places and the people they study. Mexico, France, Germany, and Spain have been among travel study destinations in past years. Distance Learning Programs Independent Study Program The independent study program was specifically designed for students who can not attend regularly scheduled college courses. This program allows students to complete the course at home (or anywhere) at their own convenience. Over 1,000 students enroll in this self-paced, individualized mode of study each year. Students can choose from 83 independent study courses ranging from American Civilization to Social Stratification. Microwave Courses Each quarter a criminal justice course is broadcast by microwave to Logan, Richfield, Vernal, and Orem. The microwave system features two-way audio and video communication between class sites and originates at WSU. Using this method of instruction allows students living in distant areas to participate in university courses, as well as reducing instructional travel costs. Health Professions and Outreach Education Currently through the distance learning area, students can earn a Bachelor's degree in Allied Health Sciences with an emphasis in Health Administrative Services, Health Services Training or Promotion, Advanced Radiological Sciences, Advanced Dental Hygiene, or Advanced Respiratory Therapy. This program is offered through a combination of independent study and intensive workshop sessions to health care personnel in Utah, Wyoming, Montana, and Washington. Special Programs Program Administrators: Tamara Aird, Sue Anderson, Stu Boyd, Dennis A. DeFrain, Barbara Hammond, Chris Jorgensen, S. Kent Paskins, Pam Rogers, Dianne Siegfreid, Brian Stecklein. Special Programs offers a variety of primarily non- credit courses and programs to meet the needs of international and local constituencies. International Programs International programs provide unique learning experiences for students from foreign countries and for Weber State students. Currently, special programs are conducted for students from Japan, Taiwan, and Saudi Arabia. • Japan Programs: In cooperation with Japan Air lines (JAL), four separate programs are being conducted on an annual basis. A one year language program, a two-year Associate of Applied Science Degree in Office Systems Support, a three-week program for JAL stewardess aspirants, and a three- week summer program for Japanese youth. A three-week summer American Culture program for 13-18 year olds and other programs are conducted annually for Japanese youth. • Taiwan Programs: Each summer Chinese students from Taiwan explore scenic areas of the western United States while studying English and American culture. • Saudi Arabia Program: A two-year Emergency Care and Rescue (Paramedic) - Associate of Applied Science Degree Program is now offered for students from Saudi Arabia. • Non-Credit English as a Second Language Program: A non-credit ESL program (Peak Experience) is offered to all foreign students who are not primarily seeking degrees. Professional Development Diverse practical programs are offered to the business/industry community who want to enhance their personal, technical, and professional performance. Our professionals meet with business and industry management to tailor the topic selection, format, instructor, and program level to the type of work performed by employees. For those preparing for career changes, a variety of training programs are also available. Each program is taught by instructors and leaders who are both business practitioners and experienced educators. Seminars and Workshops Career-oriented workshops and seminars are presented to assist individuals who want to keep current with the latest knowledge and techniques in their chosen careers. Career areas include but are not limited to allied health, law enforcement, technology, management, and verbal and written communication. Selected programs include: Technical Writing, Just-In-Time, Supervisory Training, Personal Profiles, Assessing Biased Communications Patterns, Continuous Improvement, Environmental Issues, International Protocol, and many more. Certificate Programs Several short courses which focus on significant areas of a subject matter are combined to create a certificate program. Upon completion of course requirements, individuals can earn a Continuing Education Certificate. Programs include Personal Computer Literacy and Long- Term Care Nursing. Contract Training Programs Our professional team provides analysis, design, delivery and administration of training services in direct response to a business' specific training needs. Location, times and training content will be based on the preferences of each business. This type of training ensures a substantial cost savings per employee, saves valuable travel time and expense, encourages a cooperative problem-solving effort and brings together employees of similar backgrounds, needs and interests. Selected program areas include Computer Training, Management/Organizational Training, Technical Training, Environmental Training, Business Skills, Quality Management, Health/Medical Areas and Sales, Retailing or Customer Service Training. Utah Law Enforcement Academy Weber State University has been sanctioned as an official training site for law enforcement classes by the Division of Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.), State of Utah. Our program is divided into two categories: • Category I-Basic Training for Peace Officers is designed for certification as a peace officer with full police powers. The course covers a six month training period with 497 actual class hours. Two classes consisting of 64 students are run each year. • Category II-Basic Training for Reserve, Correctional, or Special Function Officers fills requirements to become a jailer, a constable, a Protective Service Officer for the Utah Highway Patrol, a Highway Patrol Special Function Officer or security personnel for business or industry. Training consists of 168 hours of classwork covered in 12 weeks. Over 100 students enroll annually in the three sessions offered. Personal Computing in the Nineties A non-credit hands on training program designed to give you a better understanding of personal computing in business, focusing on knowledge and skills used in word processing, spreadsheets, databases, operating systems and desktop publishing in IBM environments is offered at the Ogden Metro Center. Conferences More than 20 conferences are planned and facilitated by Continuing Education each year for professional, business, government, campus and community organizations. With cooperation and utilization of the WSU Campus Life auxiliaries, Continuing Education hosts more than 10,000 guests annually on the Weber State University campus. Selected gatherings include the Families Alive, Undergraduate Literature, Reading/Writing, Continuous Improvement and Leaders in Business conferences. Community Services Program Administrators and Program Coordinators are assigned to Community Services activities on an as-needed basis. Continuing Education supports Weber State University's community service goals through collaborative contributions of leadership and talent to public-spirited local, regional and statewide efforts and by tailoring regular CE programs and services as needed to give underserved populations access to university offerings and resources.
