Show Secondary Education Composite Programs General Informatior PROGRAM: SECONDARY EDUCATION CERTIFICATION PROGRAM General Requirements: • WSU Core Requirements (see index). • General Education Requirements (see index). • See Secondary Education requirement sheets. • Admission and Retention Standards requirements for the College of Education. • The academic teaching major and teaching minor (referred to previously under Subject Specialization) must consist of not less than 45 and 24 quarter hours respectively, or a composite major of at least 68 hours. • The teaching major and teaching minor should be in subjects taught in Utah public secondary schools. Either the major or minor must be a subject which Utah secondary schools are required to teach (those marked with an asterisk do not satisfy this second requirement-see below). • The student preparing to teach in either junior or senior high schools will spend considerable time in both professional and academic specialization. Specific Requirements: • 39 credit hours for certification. • Educ 300 and 400 classes are open only to students who have been admitted to Teacher Education. (See admission requirements to Teacher Education.) • Education courses required (to be completed in sequence): Educ 195 (1), 300 (2), 301 (4), 303 (3), 305 (3), 316 (3), 462 (4), 463 (4), 495 (12), 499 (3). • Support courses required: Commun HU102 (3); Educ 365 (3); choose one of the following: Chfam SSI50 (5), Psych 314 (3), Chfam 450 (3). Teaching majors and minors in the social sciences must also take Educ 450 (3). PROGRAM: SPECIAL EDUCATION MINOR Secondary students who want to teach mild and moderately handicapped students in public schools can complete the course work in the Special Education Minor and receive the Special Education Mild/Moderate Endorsement from the Utah State Office of Education. This endorsement qualifies the holder to be employed in this field at any level from kindergarten through grade twelve. The preparation covers instructional methods, materials selection, diagnostic procedures and curriculum design. General requirements: • An overall GPA of 3.00 and admission to the Teacher Education program is required. (See admission requirements to Teacher Education.) • Students holding Elementary, Secondary or Early Childhood Certification who are seeking the minor must make application to the Teacher Education Department (Certification Office) for admission to the Special Education program. • Interview with Special Education Director is required. (See admission requirements to Teacher Education.) Specific Requirements: • A minimum of 35 credit hours plus student teaching for the endorsement. • Completion of Education 365 or equivalent. • Completion of Education 462 or equivalent. • The following courses are required: Educ 451 (3), 452 (3), 453 (3), 454 (3), 455 (3), 461 (4), 467 (4). Courses listed are offered 2 quarters yearly. See MEDUC program for graduate course listings. • Electives (choose 1 course from the following): Educ 466 (3), Educ 478 (4), Eng 331 (3). Other electives may be appropriate, but must have prior approval. TEACHING MAJORS AND MINORS The student's adviser will be a faculty member in the department of the student's academic (teaching) major. Advisement help should be sought as needed from a faculty member in the student's academic (teaching) minor. The student should also select an adviser from the professional education faculty to help in meeting requirements of the College of Education and the requirements for the Utah teaching certificate. COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJORS In lieu of the major and minor, a candidate may elect a composite teaching major which consists of a minimum of sixty-nine hours of subjects in closely related fields. The Student's adviser will be a faculty member in the department of the student's composite teaching major. Advisement help should be sought as needed from a staff member in the student's academic (teaching) minor. The student should also select an adviser from the professional education staff to help in meeting requirements of the College of Education and the requirements for the Utah teaching certificate. PROGRAM: ART COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR BACHELOR DEGREE Students will be admitted to this program upon recommendation of the art faculty following a portfolio review during their sophomore year. General Requirements: • WSU Core Requirements (see index). • General Education Requirements (see index). • A minor is not required. • Art majors must have a C or better in major courses. • Art majors must have an overall GPA of 3.00 or B. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above.) • Must achieve an overall 3.00 GPA and admission to the Teacher Education Program. (See admission requirements to Teacher Education.) Note: Educ 300 and 400 classes are open only to students admitted to Teacher Education. Specific Requirements (83 total credit hours): Foundation (19 credit hours—taken freshmen year): • Art 108 (3), (offered Autumn quarter.) • Drawing: Art 111 (4) (offered A, W, & S), 112 (4) (offered W&S). • Design: Art 116 (4), 117 (4), (offered A, W, & S). • Core (19 credit hours): Art 115 (4), HU201 (4), HU202 (4) HU203(4),218(3). Art majors who have completed the foundation and core are permitted to take the 300 level studio class without the 200 prerequisite in Metals/Jewelry, Watercolor Painting, and Weaving. Students who have not completed the foundation and core and who wish to take specialized studio courses must take the 200 level studio course. • Additional Requirements (22 credit hours): Art 251 (3), 351 (3); elect 13 credit hours from the following: Art 220 (4), 231 (4), 242 (3), 243 (4), 335 or 235 (3), 354 or 254 (3), 260 (4), 365 or 265 (3), 270 (4). Support course required: Commun 102. Art 351 must be completed prior to commencing student teaching or similar training. • The following specifics also apply: the following courses are required as part of an additional 23 credit hours: Art 305 (4), 352 (3), 452 (3). Students must meet and consult with the Department of Visual Arts chair and Art Education Program Coordinator to plan the remaining 13 credit hours. • The student must have an emphasis in two of the following areas: ceramics, drawing, graphic design, illustration, jewelry, painting photography, printmaking, sculpture, weaving. • Support courses required: Commun HU102 (3); Educ 365 (3); choose one of the following: Chfam SSI50 (5), Psych 314 (3), Chfam 450 (3). • Students obtaining an Art Composite Teacher major must satisfy the College of Education Certification Program (see Teacher Education Program). Department of Secondary Education requirements for certification must include the following: Educ 195 (1), 300 (2), 301 (4), 303 (3), 305 (3), 316 (3), 462 (4), 463 (4), 495 (12), 499 (3). PROGRAM: BIOLOGY COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR BACHELOR DEGREE Advisor: Dr. Richard Vineyard, Director, Center for Science Education 626-6160 General Requirements: • WSU Core Requirements (see index). • General Education Requirements (see index). • Psych SS101 (5) in the Social Science area is recommended for Biology Composite Teaching majors. • A minor is not required. • Biology Composite Teaching majors must have a C or better in major courses. • Biology Composite Teaching majors must achieve an overall 3.00 GPA and admission to the Teacher Education Program. (See admission requirements for Teacher Education.) Note: Educ 300 and 400 classes are open only to students admitted to Teacher Education. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). • Students obtaining a Biology Composite Teaching major must satisfy the College of Education Certification Program (see Teacher Education Program). Specific Requirements: • Minimum of 69 credit hours in the biological sciences. • Biological Science courses required: Botany LSI 10 (5), 112 (5), and 362 (5); Micro LS205 (5); Zool LSI60 (5), LS201 (5), 211 (5), 212 (5), 330 (5), and 381 (4); Botany 345 (5) or Zool 440 (4) or 445 (4) or 447 (4) or 448 (4); Zool 498 (2); Botany 320 (5) or Zool 420 (5) or 421 (5).
