Five quarter hours. Winter. Osmond 9. Calculus. A continuation of Mathematics 8, with an introduction to ordinary differential equations. Prerequisites: Mathematics 7 and 8. Five quarter hours. Spring. Osmond 10. Analytic Geometry. A short course designed primarily for those Engineering students who are unable to qualify for Mathematics 5 in time for the Winter Quarter. Prerequisites: Mathematics 2, 3, and 4. (This course will not apply toward a Mathematics major.) Five quarter hours. Spring. Clarke 12. A Survey Course in Mathematics. A unified course dealing with the essentials of algebra, trigonometry, analytic geometry, and an introduction to calculus. Recommended that Mathematics 1 or 4 precede this course. Five quarter hours. A course dealing with the origin of music and treating the development of music as an art from its beginning to 1600. Two quarter hours. (Not given 1938-1939.) Parry 5. History of Music (Classical). A study of the development of music from 1600 to 1800. Special attention is given Handel, Bach, Hayden, Mozart, and Beethoven. Two quarter hours. (Not given 1938-1939.) Parry 6. History of Music (Romantic and Modern). A development of music from 1800 to the present time. Special attention is given Wagner, Verdi, Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, Strauss, Debussy, and Stravinsky. Two quarter hours. (Not given 1938-1939.) Parry 7. Appreciation. An intensive and detailed study of music forms. Two quarter hours. Autumn. Parry 8. Appreciation (Opera). A course devoted to a technical consideration and careful analysis of several great operas. Two quarter hours. Winter. Johnson 9. Appreciation (Symphony). A detailed study of several great symphonies in which emphasis is given to form and instrumentation. Two quarter hours. Spring. Johnson 10. Elementary Harmony. A course devoted to the study of chord construction. Open only to students of ability and training. Prerequisite: Solfeggio or its equivalent, and the ability to read music in soprano and bass cleffs. Three quarter hours. (No credit given for less than three quarters' work.) Autumn. Johnson 11. Elementary Harmony. A continuation of Music 10, dealing with in version and dominant harmony. Prerequisite: Music 10. Three quarter hours. (No credit given for less than three quarters' work.) Winter. Johnson 12. Elementary Harmony. A continuation of Music 11. Devoted to a study of dominant and leading tone sevenths and modulation. Prerequisite: Music 11. Three quarter hours.
