Show WEBER COLLEGE - OGDEN, UTAH 25 Clubs and student body units sponsor a choice dance program. The social calendar is rich in its offering of planned affairs. One of the outstanding features is the high quality dance program sponsored by the active clubs and student body units of the college. Once a year each social club: Excelsior, Frenisti, Otyokwa, LaDianaeda, Sigma Delta Pi, Skull, and Phoenix, is host to a choice social evening of dancing. During the year different student body units sponsor traditional dances of an informal and formal nature. In the autumn quarter are scheduled the President's Reception, the Associated Women Students' Ball and the Christmas Dance; in the winter quarter, the Associated Women Students' Ball, the Acorn Dance, and the College Prom; in the spring quarter, the Associated Women Students' Spring Formal, and the Reception to the Graduates. The Department of Music offers opportunities for the development of group organizations, and vocal and instrumental soloists. Each year the Department of Music concentrates its efforts upon the development and presentation of a standard light opera and an original musical continuity. The Symphony Orchestra, the Band, and the combined Glee Clubs present an evening of music each quarter. The Musettes, and the instrumental and vocal quartets, trios, and duets are composed of students of exceptional talent. Throughout the state they represent the college in musical activities. The Band and Orchestra function prominently in school activities. The Orchestra strives toward the artistic rendition of overtures and symphonies and takes an active part in the presentation of the college opera. The Department of Speech offers opportunity for student participation in plays, college assemblies, and radio programs. The Department of Speech supervises the production of plays and directs all speech activities, other than debate. Play Production: Three full-length plays, together with a varied number of one-act plays, are presented annually. In these productions qualified speech majors are called upon to assist in various phases of the production, including work as assistant-directors. In instances of opera presentations, the Speech Departmment may forego production of a major play during the quarter in question and unite its efforts with those of the Music Department. Speech Activities: (1) Extempore Speaking: The James L. Barker Contest is designed to stimulate interest in extempore speech and to encourage competition between Freshmen and Sophomore students. The winner of this contest is honored by having his class numerals engraved on a silver cup, and by an individual cash award of ten dollars provided by the donor, Professor James L. Barker. Impromptu Speaking: The J. S. Lewis award is intended to foster impromptu speech competition among individual participants. The winner of this contest is presented with a gold medal. Oratory: Each year, the department conducts a major inter-collegiate oratorical contest on the general subject "Americanism." This contest is sponsored by the Ogden Junior Chamber of Commerce in the interest of American ideals, and provides, as a permanent college possession, a gold cup on which is inscribed the name of the winner, together with his class numerals. 24 WEBER COLLEGE - OGDEN, UTAH the aim of providing an opportunity for membership for every student who desires to become affiliated with a social group in Weber College, (4) to regulate club activities making sure they result in wholesome entertainment for their members and the student body rather than adverse criticism for the college, and (5) to regulate rushing, pledging, and initiations of social clubs. Clubs and associations serve group interests within the student body. It is the policy of Weber College to encourage the organisation of clubs and associations that serve varying group interests of a social, professional, and honorary nature. Each of the clubs of a strictly social nature is organized to serve a distinctive purpose: the women's clubs, Otyokwa, to promote the spirit of friendship and good sportsmanship; LaDianaeda, to further culture, beauty, and friendliness; Iota Tau Kappa, to study etiquette and to pro mote friendliness; the men's clubs, Excelsior, to promote the raising of college ideals; Phoenix, to study student government and promote student activities; Frenisti, to further aesthetic interests; Sigma Delta PL to aid and cooperate with the student administraiton in promoting activities of the school; Vikings, to increase participation in out-of-door activities, and to foster development of good sportsmanship, fellowship, and scholarship; and Skull, to promote wholesome social activity. Students pursuing definite major courses organize themselves each year into professional clubs. The purpose of each major group organization is to promote high scholastic attainment and to acquaint the student member with various phases of his chosen profession. Guest speakers are invited to address the clubs, and occasional excursions are made to institutions, or to investigate projects of an educational nature. The Education Club, the Engineer Club, the English Club, the International Relations Club, the Pre-medics Club, the Sociology Club, the TriVesta Club (Home Economics), and the Yeoman Club (Forestry), constitute the roster of these organizations. The Whip and Letterman clubs are honorary organizations, member ship being based upon the point system according to activities and scholarship. The Orion Club and the Weber Club are honorary, their membership being restricted to meritorious students who annually win awards in recognition of their service to the student body. Phi Rho Pi is a national honorary debating fraternity, its membership being restricted to students receiving honors in debate activities of the college. Student Activities The student activity program prepares for social responsibility and leadership, and for appreciation of the cultural and aesthetic sources of enjoyment in leisure time. In the belief that fulfillment of the objectives of a junior college education are best realized when students are prepared for the fullest participation in life, for social responsibility, leadership, and appreciation for the cultural and aesthetic sources of enjoyment, Weber College encourages a student activity program which provides for such development. The Committee on Student Activities consists of four faculty members and six student representatives. This committee is responsible for calendaring all student activities, exclusive of athletics, and supervising all social activities. |
