Show Student Affairs The Office of Veterans' Affairs personnel will assist veterans in all educational phases with respect to the transition from the military to the college community environment. The office will also provide information on orientation, study skills, academic development and tutorial assistance where needed. LIBRARY SERVICES The Library provides a rich store of materials especially selected to serve the students and faculty. The collection, continually growing in cultural value, is composed of a number of types of educational media. The book and documents collections include more than 300,000 volumes along with a working library of pamphlets, and bibliographical aids. The College through its library service subscribes to approximately 2,160 literary, scientific and educational periodicals and newspapers. Tape recordings, and an increasing number of educational films (presently totaling 1,496) are also available. A new addition to the Library was completed in 1976. The building has three floors with a total of over 150,000 square feet. In addition to regular library operations, the facility houses the Counseling Center, the Testing Center, the Placement Center, the Learning Center and the Instructional Development area. In addition, the Library houses several special collections, the largest of which is the Howell collection of approximately 10,500 volumes. This collection, willed to the College by the late Judge James A. Howell in 1954, consists mostly of eighteenth and nineteenth century American and English literature. Other collections include the Lawrence J. Burton Congressional Collection, the Jeanette McKay Morrell Porcelain Collection, the Frank William Becraft Oriental Artifacts, the Paul Branson Art Collection, the Hyrum and Ruby Wheelwright Mormon Literature Collection and most recently, the Roland Parry Music Collection. An Instructional Media minor is offered for those desiring to enter the profession of librarianship. The program is administered by the College of Education and the courses are listed within that section of the catalog. Library faculty serve as instructors for the program. The Library hours are: Monday through Thursday 7 a.m. - 11 p.m. Friday 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sunday 1 p.m. - 6 p.m. STUDENT AFFAIRS The departments and programs in Student Affairs provide support services relating to the enhancement of personal relationships and open problem solving climates on campus. An over-all goal of Student Affairs is to assist students requesting any student service and/or other information concerning the College, courteously and promptly. Students will also be assisted in becoming aware of services, activities, and programs available to them. The personnel in Student Affairs will assist in designing, developing, implementing and evaluating programs to expand students' personal development and enrich co-curricular opportunities. The responsibility of the Dean is to coordinate all Student Affairs services. 36 Student Affairs ASSOCIATED STUDENTS The Associated Students of Weber State College operates under the ASWSC Constitution. The ASWSC provides the opportunity for students to serve either as an elected student officer or on several committees. Elected student officers include the student body president and vice presidents. ASWSC committees and groups include Academic Assembly, Leadership, Elections, Community Service, Orientation. VICE, Ombudsman and others as organized. At the time of registration, a student must obtain a studentbody identification card which will admit him to the following events: football, basketball, dramatic and musical entertainments, socials, convocations, etc. Also: An ID. card is required for checking out books from the library. ELIGIBILITY FOR STUDENT ACTIVITIES An Eligibility Committee composed of administrators, faculty, and students shall be administratively appointed to interpret all rules governing eligibility, and determine eligibility of all participants in organized student body activities according to the following standards: 1. A student must be matriculated and registered as a full-time student (ten credit hours). (Twelve hours if scholarship or financial aid students). A student changing to part-time status as a result of withdrawing from a class during the quarter becomes ineligible to participate in extracurricular activities. 2. A student must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 (C average). Any student who participates in any of the activities concerned without meeting all the criteria of eligibility shall place both himself and his organization in jeopardy. The following activities are among those for which eligibility requirements should be determined: 1. Student government and other student leadership and service activities. 2. All student organizations, including social and service organizations, sororities, fraternities, ethnic and religious and other similar organizations. 3. Music and Dramatic Events. 4. Debate and Public Speaking. 5. Publication Staffs. 6. Chantonelles, Song Leaders, and Rally Men. 7. King and Queen and other similar contests, such as "Miss Weber State," "Ski King and Queen." 8. In order to represent Weber State College in intercollegiate athletics, students must comply with the eligibility regulations adopted by the Institutional Council of the College and the constitution and operating codes of the Big Sky Conference and the NCAA and the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. STUDENT SOCIAL STANDARDS Weber State College extends the privilege of attending the school to those persons who meet entrance requirements, standards of health, character, and prior appropriate conduct. The student enters college by choice and is not required by law to attend. Students are subject to federal, state and local laws as well as College rules and regulations and are not entitled to immunity or privileges before the law. Students found guilty of violations of College rules and regulations are subject to such disciplinary action as the College may consider appropriate. Appropriate DressAppropriate dress is expected for the campus and in all buildings. Use of LiquorWeber State College does not permit the use of alcoholic beverages either on the campus or at College-sponsored functions off the campus. Any violation of this rule is subject to disciplinarv action. 37 |
