Show Humanities Communication II. Specific Requirements: A. Minimum of 45 credit hours in Communication courses. B. Communication courses required for all areas of concentration-Communication 111 (3) and 112 (3). C. The following areas of concentration are offered: 1. Broadcasting a. Communication courses required (25 credit hours): Communication 170 (3), 271 (3), 272 (3), 275 (3), 372 (2), 373 (3), 374 (3), 475 (2), 476 (3). b. Communication courses to elect from: (15 hours from Communication courses in consultation with an adviser). 2. Oral Communication a. Communication courses required (24 credit hours): Communication 102 (3), 220 (3); 107 (3) or 407 (3); 312 (3) or 321 (3) or 350 (3); 315 (3), 380 (3), 415 (3). b. Communication courses to elect from: (15 hours from Communication courses in consultation with an adviser). 3. Journalism a. Communication courses required (24 credit hours): Communication 113 (3), 217 (3), 235 (3), 313 (3), 319 (3), 322 (3), 328 (3), 330 (3). b. Communication courses to elect from: (15 hours from Communication courses in consultation with an adviser). c. All Journalism students must be able to type proficiently. 4. Public Relations a. Communication courses required (27 credit hours): Communication 105 (3), 113 (3), 170 (3), 217 (3), 235 (3), 240 (3), 320 (3), 328 (3), 340 (3). b. (See Composite and Interdepartmental Programs.) _ Program: Communication Departmental Honors I. General Requirements: A. Enroll in General Honors and complete at least 10 hours of General Honors courses. B. Maintain an overall G. P. A. of 3.3. C. Fulfill requirements for the Communications departmental major. (45 hours) II. Specific Requirements: A. In fulfilling requirements for a Communications major take at least 18 hours of departmental Honors courses, half of which must be upper division work. B. Take Communications 499 in fulfillment of the Honors Senior Project requirement. C. A student may receive Communications Honors credit in the following courses: Communications 102, 105, 112, 170, 220, 240, 307, 321, 322, 380, 407 and 415. D. Permission from the department chairman should be sought Before registering in a course for Honors credit. A written agreement should be reached with the appropriate professor regarding the work expected for Honors credit. (See Composite and Interdepartmental Programs.) 148 Humanities Communication Program: Communication Teaching MajorBachelor Degree I. General Requirements: A. A grade of C or better major courses. II. Specific Requirements: A. A minimum of 48 credit hours for the teaching major. B. A minimum of 20 credit hours of core courses; a minimum of 20 hours in an emphasis of either Journalism, or Oral Communication; and a minimum of 8 credit hours in electives. III. Courses to be used for Core requirements and Special Emphasis: A. Core Courses: Communication HU102 (3), HU111 (3) or 315 (3), HU112 (3), 113 (3), 107 (3); 211 (2) or 215 (3), 307 (3). B. Journalism Emphasis: Communication 217 (3), 235 (3), 319 (3), HU328 (3), 374 (3), 486 (3), 489 (3-6). C. Oral Communication Emphasis: Communication HU105 (3); 220 (3) or 321 (3); 312 (3) or 350 (3); 380 (3), 407 (3), 315 (3), 485 (3). D. Electives Recommended (8 hours): English 321: Communication 118, 170, 220, 240, 480; other courses from the department can be taken; Psychology 101 (5); Sociology 250 (5). Program: Communication Minor and Communication Teaching Minor I. General Requirements: A. A grade of C or better in minor courses. II. Specific Requirements: A. A minimum of 20 credit hours for a Communication Departmental Minor. Communication 112 required. The remaining elective Communication courses should be selected in consultation with a departmental adviser. B. A minimum of 26 credit hours for Communication Teaching Minor. Required Communication courses: HU105 (3), 107 (3), HU111 (3), HU112 (3), 211 (2), 220 (3), 271 (3), 415 (3), 485 (3). EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITY PROGRAM ForensicsParticipation in inter-collegiate forensic activities is conducted in conjunction with the instructional program in debate and interpretation. Students take active part in regional and national forensic meets under the direction of the debate coach. Speech ContestsOutstanding students participate in the following contests: The Rotary International Oratorical Contest, open to all students: the James N. Luvaris Extempore Speaking Contest for Junior and Senior students. Recognition is given in the form of financial awards. High School Forensic ContestThe Department of Communication is host to the annual Weber State Leland H. Monson High School Forensic Tournament held in February of each year. The tournament is in its forty-third year. Over six hundred students from Utah, Idaho, Nevada and Wyoming participate. The SignpostJournalism students have the opportunity to work on the Weber State College student newspaper. The Signpost. Weber State College BroadcastersStudents interested in radio and television broadcast operation have an opportunity to prepare and present "live" broadcast programs over KWCR-FM, the college radio station. 149 |
