Show My parents taught me the importance of education and commitment to religious convictions. My mother was well educated and graduated from a Protestant school with high honors. I attended schools in West Weber walking three miles to school and three miles back. My first teacher was Miss Gunie Anderson. Other teachers were Miss Annie Singleton, John Brown and John Royal. As a faithful Primary student, I received a book from Mrs. Collins for attendance. Small cards with a verse were given us each Sunday. After four or five cards were memorized, a larger card was given with a verse to learn. Sunday School and day school were held in the same building. When I was nine years of age in early summer, my brother Simeon had made a new ditch for a plot of ground where he had planted a garden. He had turned water into it to run in different ways. In that they were newly made, the water broke through the bank and was running to waste, and no one was near to prevent it. I went to work to dam the ditch, but the more I worked the worse it got. Seeing that I couldn't dam it with earth, in desperation, I placed myself in the ditch and remained there for sometime. When I saw that it was beyond my control, I finally abandoned the attempt. On account of me working so hard and so long with the sun over head, I was sun struck and consequently I was ill all summer. About September, my mother took me to meeting to be administered to by the Elders, and I was healed. Holidays were a big event in the lives of the people of the community especially in the summertime. We would meet at the bowery which was covered with tree limbs to provide adequate shade. This was located next to the school building. A band would begin playing early in the morning and continue throughout the day. The ward was canvassed to provide money to buy buns, and lemonade was made in a barrel. Once, on a Sunday, my mother said not to go away. But one of my sisters and I when to the river and got in a boat and went sailing. We got down into a whirlpool. We were very frightened because we couldn't seem to get away from the whirlpool. When we did, we had to walk a long way home. At church one time, a man talked too long. When it was about time to dismiss, I went out and held the door so people couldn't get out. I pulled so hard I pulled the doorknob off. Then I ran and hid in a ditch. One time our parents left two of us children alone and left cooked duck for us to eat. When my sister and I saw several Indians coming, we hid under the bed. The Indians came in and ate all the food on the table. We didn't crawl out from under the bed until the Indians were gone! |
