Show Grandmother was about 5' 3" tall and of medium complexion. She had beautiful, long, white hair which was naturally curly. She was always neatly dressed. She would come to our home so Mother could comb and brush her hair and then attractively arrange it parted in the center. Mother would roll a section from each side above her ears and secure the roll with hair pins. Then she would comb up all the remaining hair from the sides and back and arrange it in a bun on top of her head. This seemed to give added height and style to her appearance. When necessary for Mother to be away, grandmother would read and sing to us in her native tongue which was French. Well do I remember her singing the "Marseille", the French National Anthem, and other songs. Grandmother translated French for some of our Church authorities. She taught us a French songs which we knew quite well while young. She and her twin sister Emily were asked to sing duets at stake conference in Ogden. Madeleine spoke beautiful English with no accent. Several times when William Moore, one of the Church students of grandmother Madeleine, was on his mission, he would be asked a question while teaching investigator. Immediately the answer was given him as he recalled what he had been taught in Church by Madeleine Malan Farley. May times during his life when he would see me, he would express this thankfulness for my grandmother's teachings. Grandmother had a small room to the south of her pantry. In those days they kept their food items in there. During the hot summer, grandmother dried apples. She made the most tasty apple pies. They had a flavor of their own. Our social gatherings were centered around our grandparents, their children and grandchildren. Tasty meals were prepared and enjoyed by all. Singing and dancing would follow.
