Description |
Stanley Purrington was originally from Ogden, Utah and joined the Army in 1918. He and sixty other young men from Ogden were sent to Camp Fremont, California for training. Upon completion of his training he was dispatched to France to become part of the occupying forces at Camp Pontanezen. During his time there, he was a battalion sergeant major in the 8th Infantry. Purrington returned home to Ogden on August 30, 1919. The diaries in this collection detail his time in service from August 12, 1918 to March 26, 1919 and May 29, 1919 to Sept. 28, 1919, along with his experiences overseas. The view book includes photographs and postcards collected by Purrington during his time in Europe as well as some biographical information. |

Item Description |
Black leather covered journal. The black dye has worn away in spots to reveal the original brown of the leather and the paper inside is no longer attached to the cover, though the sturdy sewn binding has held all the pages together. This journal measures 7 inches long, 4 inches wide and 1/2 inch tall when closed. 44 double sided pages are covered in cursive text written with pen and ink. Twelve blank double sided pages at the end of the book were not scanned. |

Show London June 6th (Continued) little room on the second floor and their bodies hidden at the foot of the narrow stairway Here also Sir Walter Raleigh was kept in prison, and we passed thru his cell. Henry VI it is said also met a mysterious death in this tower and so many murders took place within its walls that it gained its present name the “Bloody Tower”. The oldest part of the Tower or Castle is called the White Tower built by William the Conqueror and used as a palace and a fortress by many monarchs who succeeded him. Here is located an old Chapel where many of the crowned heads of England came to worship We went all thru this tower seeing many interesting sights among them being the collection of Crown Jewels, containing the largest diamond in the World and also the large ruby. What a wonderful collection they are to be sure and it was a sight to gaze opon, all that wealth lying there for the use of the King of England We also saw the Armour and lances, swords and Battle axes used in the days of Knighthood There is also the old block and headsman’s axe used to lop off the heads of offenders in the “good old days”? and the rack, thumbscrews and other instruments of torture.
