Description |
Stanley Purrington was originally from Ogden, Utah and joined the Army in 1918. He and sixty other young men from Ogden were sent to Camp Fremont, California for training. Upon completion of his training he was dispatched to France to become part of the occupying forces at Camp Pontanezen. During his time there, he was a battalion sergeant major in the 8th Infantry. Purrington returned home to Ogden on August 30, 1919. The diaries in this collection detail his time in service from August 12, 1918 to March 26, 1919 and May 29, 1919 to Sept. 28, 1919, along with his experiences overseas. The view book includes photographs and postcards collected by Purrington during his time in Europe as well as some biographical information. |

Item Description |
Black leather covered journal. The black dye has worn away in spots to reveal the original brown of the leather and the paper inside is no longer attached to the cover, though the sturdy sewn binding has held all the pages together. This journal measures 7 inches long, 4 inches wide and 1/2 inch tall when closed. 44 double sided pages are covered in cursive text written with pen and ink. Twelve blank double sided pages at the end of the book were not scanned. |

Show London June 8th 1919 (Continued) 9th Tues 10th Wed turning to go back to the Hut I figured we were in the Southwest part of the City and a walk of two blocks to the left would bring us to the Strand so we started and sure enough came to what I figured was the Strand and down it we went. But we soon came to St Paul’s Cathedral and I wondered who on earth had moved it to the S.W. part of the city, then the truth dawned on me. Instead of being on the Strand and going northeast, we were on Fleet St. in the Northeast part of the city and traveling Southwest Of course we were alright and headed toward the hut but that is an illustration of how one can get lost in London Decided to remain here tonight and depart for Southampton tomorrow night Don’t know what’s on for tomorrow. Thurs- Paris France, June 11th 1919 Im back again in “gay Paree” and headed again for the worst hole on earth- -Brest Oh how I hated to leave England and how many memories of the wonderful time I had, will linger with me. On the afternoon of that last day in London I met a real girl, who had a date with a “gob” and wanted me to go into the Hut and chase him up for her. I didn’t find him and took his place myself. She was quite a nice little girl possessed however with one ambition that being to “Vamp” a Yank and get across to the U.S.A. I kidded her along and had lots of fun. Finally put |
