Show WORLD WAR II In 1939, as Adolf Hitler's armies conquered Europe and Imperial Japan waged war in Asia, the United States military contracted with civilian construction companies on a wide variety of projects. Utah Construction became a major participant in mining tungsten in Korea and iron ore near Cedar City, Utah. Defense construction included building the $43 million Geneva Steel Division and the Deseret Chemical Warfare Supply Depot near Provo and St. John, Utah, respectively; a $6 million supply depot in Oakland, California; and the San Diego Destroyer Base. Three of the company's major concerns were located in shipyards along the West Coast, in the Pacific Islands, and in the Territory of Alaska. Pearl Harbor airstrip, circa 1941 |
