Newspapers and radio broadcasts publicized the highway advancing steadily through the interior, but wartime censorship limited news about the fierce and historic battles raging in western Alaska. Nearly every native village had a unit of the Alaska Territorial Guard. These trained units became Alaska's major defense along the coastline of the Arctic Ocean and the Bering Sea. The United States military evacuated many Aleut villagers from their homes, relocating them inland under government supervision. Families were disrupted, but some returned to their homes after the war ended. However Attu Village would be destroyed in battle and never restored.
