Show The company set up intermittent camps along the 150-mile stretch in order to work various sections of the road at one time. Glacial lakes and swamps dotted the area, and much of the terrain was covered by spongy muskeg. "On higher ground the old Army road had held up," Lanks reported, but to get to these sections with road-building equipment and establish camps there was a problem... At White River, the Utah Construction Camp had flown supplies by pontoon airplane in to two lakes close to the highway. One of these, Horse Camp Lake, was complete in every respect, even to an electric-light plant. All these things had taken place only a few days before our arrival, we learned later, and the progress of each camp was unknown to the other at that time. The authorities at Whitehorse and at Fairbanks, over 600 miles apart, knew better what was going on at both ends of these 32 miles than did the camps themselves. |
