A sense of impending war-or war itself-was a relative constant from 1939 to 1975. As a result the military construction, which helped rescue the United States from the Great Depression and lasted through World War II, continued almost without slacking throughout the decades of the Cold War. The urgency felt by government leaders and military commanders filtered through the ranks of Utah Construction. Perhaps the most eloquent evidence of secrecy is the scant, and sometimes mysterious, mention of military projects in the otherwise informative pages of the company's annual reports.
