Annual reports first appeared in 1952, shortly after Edmund W. Littlefield joined the company as general vice president and treasurer. Littlefield believed in sharing information and brought a new openness to stockholder meetings. He became general manager in 1958, president in 1961, and in 1969 he encouraged the sale of public stock. At left, Robert V. Haack, president of the New York Stock Exchange, welcomes Littlefield (center). Note the UC ticker symbol behind him. Littlefield's foresight and open style combined with the financial expertise of Marriner Eccles to create a unique company leadership. In 197a, when Eccles retired, Littlefield became chairman of the board, with Alexander "Bud" Wilson as president and chief operating officer. By emphasizing lucrative mining ventures, Littlefield positioned Utah International for the 1976 merger with General Electric. This 76-year rise from a railroading company in Northern Utah to a mining multinational remains a classic success story in the annals of United States business.
