One Utah Construction camp went up near the White River, a small stream that, during run-off, stretched its banks to over a mile. As war correspondent Lanks described: Shortly we were winging our way over the great White River. This was the glacial stream that had blocked all the road builders' attempts to get into this impassable stretch until now... It was now bridged and where the bridge spanned the waters we roared over the camp of the Utah Construction Company. Along the shores of the stream we could make out large accumulations of debris washed up by former floods. Over everything was the white silt from which the river gets its name, for this glacial water carries a great amount of white volcanic ash down from the coastal range.
