SWIMMING Weber participated in four meets during the 1936 season, two with Utah State Agricultural College and two with West High School of Salt Lake City. The first meet was held in Logan and was won by the Aggies with a close score. Weber won five of the eight events but failed to win the meet because of losing second and third places. In the second meet, held at Weber with the West High Panthers, champions of Salt Lake City, the Wildcat splashers were defeated by the close score of 40 1/2 to 34 1/2. As in the previous meet, Weber captured a majority of the first places but lost the meet because of its failure to gain its quota of second and third places. The second Weber-U. S. A. C. meet, which was held at Weber, was won by the Wildcats. Weber performed well, and excellent time was recorded. In fancy diving Weber captured all three places. The final meet of the season was a close one. When the points were totaled, it was found that West had won by one point, 38 to 37. The Wildcats gave their best performances in these last two meets. Yet throughout the season the team gave Weber sustained representation, TENNIS TEAM FIRST ROW: Clyde Hunter, Max Baker, Bill Gleason, Ronald Urry, Woodrow Call. SECOND ROW: Lloyd Jacobsen, Ralph Wiggins, Frank McQuown, Harold Williams, Reed Swenson (coach). TENNIS Tennis, an ever popular sport at Weber, had an exceptionally large following this year. As soon as the snow had cleared from the courts, tennis lovers began to limber up. From then on the courts were crowded from morning until evening. Prospects for the tennis team were bright. A meet was held with Westminster on April 18. Although defeated in 7 out of 10 matches, Weber exhibited no faults that practice could not iron out. The complete schedule included a meet with Ogden High on April 22 and a return encounter with Westminster on April 28. Weber anticipated entering a singles and doubles team in the B. Y. U. Relay Carnival at Provo on April 25. Final on the list but greater in importance was the junior college conference meet at Salt Lake City, May 8. |
