Trevithick Adviser Frank McQuown Fiction Editor Tom McQuown Humor Editor Iona Langford Poetry and Essay Editor Scribulus, a quarterly literary magazine, designed for the publication of good writing done by members of the student body and alumni, came into existence early in the school year. Without precedent or pattern to guide its staff in its formation, Scribulus has placed itself high among the ranking literary attempts in the intermountain district. This is attributable to the fact that the material submitted was of such high standard, manifesting as it did no little amount of keen observation as well as careful composition. The Scribulus staff served as a sorting-machine, separating the finer material from the other. It presented the better executed manuscripts to an appreciative student body and faculty in the fall, winter, and spring quarters. In the first issue Scribulus set up as its standard the endeavor "to main- tain such a standard of excellency for publication that the appearance in its columns of the work of those contributing shall be, in itself, an appreciation of their efforts, and encouragement to continued effort, and an incentive to those with latent ability," and has so well lived up to that objective that new standards, even more advanced and idealistic in nature, are now being formulated. The successful launching of a new publication, with its attendant problems of finance and distribution, its uncertainties and indecisions, demands positive qualities of salesmanship and organization. The response to the magazine from within and without the school gives sufficient evidence of the presence of these qualities in Scribulus business-staff members. |
