Show Blaine Larsen Wanda Welling ORATORY '05 CONTEST The '05 interclass oratorical contest was held March 13. Blaine Larsen took first place with his stirring address, Rhapsody in Red, and Wanda Welling followed him closely with her Should Taxes Be Higher? As the champion orator of the school, Mr. Larsen accompanied the debaters and extempore speakers to the Utah-Idaho Forensic League and made a favorable showing. At the time of publication, the winner of the other oratorical contest, the Evelyn Neilson Woods Contest, which was held late in May, was not known. HIGH SCHOOL DEBATE TOURNAMENT On February 14 and 15, under the direction of Mr. Nilsson and sponsored by the Ogden Chamber of Commerce, the third annual Weber College Utah High School Debate Tournament was held. One hundred and sixty-three representatives of the high schools of Utah participated. Two scholarships to Weber were awarded, one to Byron Rampton of Davis High School as winner in oratory, the other to Wayne Bundy of Ogden High School as outstanding debater of the tournament. The first scholarship was furnished by the Retail Merchants of the Ogden Chamber of Commerce. The second scholarship was furnished by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Wayne Bundy and his teammate, Pat Quinn, tied for first place with the Lincoln High School team, composed of Lorna Mecham and Don Watkins. The winners of the extempore contest were Phil Jensen of American Fork and Betty Neil of Ogden. Evan Terry of Lincoln High School took second place in oratory. This Tournament is unique in the West because of its size, which has grown by halves during the three years of its existence, and because of the amount of practice afforded all speakers, both winners and losers. Louise Linton Beth Lockhart Montrue Williams EXTEMPORE SPEAKING UTAH-IDAHO EXTEMPORE CONTEST After an intensive season of extemporaneous speaking under the direction of Mr. Nilsson, three students, Lester Richardson, Thomas McKay, and Louise Linton, were selected as representatives of Weber College in the annual Utah-Idaho Forensic Tournament held in Salt Lake City. Speaking upon various phases of the New Deal, they carried success to Weber. Louise Linton took first place and was awarded a gold medal. Lester Richardson and Thomas McKay made showings. SPRING NOVITIATE CONTEST April 6, Weber held its second novitiate extempore contest of the year as a preliminary for the J. S. Lewis contest. Like the fall novitiate tournament, this was held to encourage the activity of inexperienced speakers. Subjects for discussion were selected from contemporary news events. Miss Lockhart, first place winner, was awarded a gold key, and Miss Williams, second place winner, received a silver key. Bruce Schmalz received honorable mention. J. S. LEWIS CONTEST April 8, a large number of students who had had previous experience in public speaking entered the preliminary rounds of the J. S. Lewis and Company extempore contest. Lester Richardson, James Lazenby, Thomas McKay, Grant Burton, and Frank McQuown succeeded in reaching the finals. April 10, in assembly these five speakers and Beth Lockhart, winner of the novitiate' division, gave the final speeches before the Student Body Subjects were drawn from the news of the previous week. The judges acclaimed Beth Lockhart first place winner and Lester Richardson second place winner Miss Lockhart received a gold medal, and Mr. Richardson a silver medal. The awards were given by J. S. Lewis and Company. This firm has sponsored the contest for many years. |
