Show SMOKERS ASK FOR LARGER SMOKING AREA WSC smokers won the freedom to extend the smoking area from a small smoking section in the snack bar to the entire snackbar. The decision made by the Union Policy Board was the result of complaints from smokers. An initial protest was staged January 18 when about 30 students entered the non-smoking portion of the snack bar with cigarettes lit. The incident lasted only about 15 minutes. Mr. Farrell Shephard, U.B. Director, arrived upon the request of the non-smokers. The protestors agreed to return to the smoking lounge after a meeting with the U.B. Policies Board was set. The Policy Board decided upon a two-week trial period allowing smokers in all areas of the eating area. At the end of the two-week period the decision was made to make the ruling permanent. LIBRARY DRIVE Friday, January 22, 1971, the Signpost's headline queried, "Have You Been Had?" The article proceeded to explain that a flyer bearing the same headline distributed the week before, sent out by a Student Action Committee was designed to make students aware of the dilemma of the WSC library. It described the deficiencies of the library and of the danger of loss of accreditation for Weber it library conditions were not improved. This began a month's drive to raise funds for library improvements. Blue Key Fraternity sponsored "Bucks For Books," a drive to raise funds asking students to donate $5.00 tor the purchase of books. The donor was asked to designate the area for which the book was to be purchased. The Signpost sponsored a "Letters to Legislators" campaign in which students were encouraged to write letters to state representatives expressing inadequacies. Tuesday, February 16, 1971, nearly one month after the campaign began, the Signpost headlines declared "WSC Accreditation in No Danger." The article quoted Dr. Hofmann, Academic Vice President of Weber State, saying, "There has been much talk about Weber losing its accreditation. There is not an ounce of truth in it." Dr. Hofmann explained that the Northwest Accrediting team scheduled to visit the school during the fall of 1973 takes into consideration all of the academic aspects of the school before deciding to renew or withdraw accreditation. "Never has the team withdrawn accreditation solely because of an inadequate library," stated Dr. Hofmann. The library issue began to lade from the limelight, but the results of the drive were significant. Blue Key President Alfred Belt reported in mid April that "Bucks For Books" had gathered over $950 and the total was expected to swell over the $1,000 mark by the end of the year. Peggy Jo Parker, Signpost editor, said more than 150 letters to legislators were logged through the office. WILDCATS AND AGGIES MEET AT LAST! A forecast for a future of rivalry between Weber State and Utah State was assured February 23 when the Wildcats blew the top of the newly completed U.S.U. special events arena. Weber stung the favored U.S.U. hoopsters with a 63-62 defeat. Support for the W.S.C. team rose from within the studentbody and the community as well. Two dozen students slept overnight outside the Gym building to be assured a ticket for the game. When the tickets went on sale at 6:00 a.m. a crowd of several hundred students lined the halls. During the game, Utah Staters sported banners questioning "Willie or Won't he?" and "Weber Who?" The day following the defeat of the nationally ranked Logan squad Ogden businessmen mirrored the U.S.U. slogans with a few twists proving "he who laughs last laughs best." |
