Show Cause and Effect "OH, ISN'T THIS A WONDERFUL day! We can surely take some beautiful pictures. Of course you and Rob will be on deck at 1 o'clock," exclaimed Peg, all in one breath, as she dashed into the class room. "I guess we'll have to," returned Jack in such an icy voice that Peg's gaiety actually froze. Jack was seldom grouchy and this sudden outburst was very unexpected. "Why, what do you mean?" "Simply this: there are too many in the party." "There are only Rob, Retta, you and I." "I know that. Of course Rob's going. There's some induce- ment for him. Why he's plumb crazy over Retta. As far as I am concerned there's nothing so very-" "Jack, do you mean that?" Peg's voice was a little shaky. "I most emphatically do." "Then to make it more pleasant for you, I will see to it that the person who bores you so has a very pressing engagement about 1 o'clock." Peg tossed her pretty head angrily and walked out into the hall, leaving Jack in a very bewildered state of mind. The students were changing classes. The halls were full. She knew that she was going to cry or "something." So, dashing through the crowd to the lower hall, she threw herself into her chum's arms. "What is the trouble, Peg?" asked the astonished Retta and pro- ceeded to ask the same or similar questions for a solid five minutes before Peg pulled herself together and answered through her tears. "Oh, nothing much; only I am now able to report that you have won. I have failed. Jack just now told me that Rob was crazy about you-but he showed me plainly that, personally, he doesn't care for me." "You must be mistaken, Peg. How did he show such a thing?" "Don't ask any questions and don't get excited if I have to go to the dentist's at any very inopportune moment." One o'clock came and so did Rob-and Jack! The girls had just arrived. If one had noticed Peg's face one would have seen a what-on-earth-shall-I-do expression thereon, but when the boys ap- proached she was smiling pleasantly. |
