Great secrecy surrounded one challenging project. Navy officials worried that the fuel for the Pacific Fleet, stored in "fuel farms" like the one pictured at left, lay vulnerable to aerial attack. The Navy leased Red Hill, which rose almost directly east of Pearl Harbor and northwest of Honolulu. Navy crews began on the day after Christmas in 1940 to clear pineapple fields, lay pipe, and erect temporary work camps. Navy officials then called for hard-rock miners and construction workers capable of building a giant fuel storage system 100 feet underground. Harry Morrison recommended Utah Construction, then completing the Delaware Aquaduct, which carried water into New York City. Utah Construction workers joined a variety of miners and builders traveling to the Hawaiian Islands with visions of balmy beaches, government pay, and long-term employment.
