Monson, Read, Nilsson, Trevithick 5. Argumentation. A critical study of the logical process of thinking, and practice in handling of evidence, detecting of fallacies, and presentation of material. Five quarter hours. Winter. Monson 6. Journalism. A study and practice in the fundamentals of news-writing. The writing of an attractive, straight news style is considered. To give practical expression, the class gathers news for the college paper, Signpost, composes, and edits it. Two quarter hours. Autumn. Nilsson 7. Journalism. A study and practice in featurized and interpretive newswriting in contrast to a straight news style. Stress is laid upon copy and proof reading according to the principles previously learned. Class members are apprentice editors for certain issues of the college paper. Newspaper plants and scholastic press conferences are attended. Two quarter hours. Winter. Nilsson 8. Journalism. A study and writing of editorials, interviews, longer feature articles, and other important assignments. Class members who have not yet had an opportunity of being editors of the school paper fill that position for certain issues. Professional writers address the class upon significant practical phases of journalism. Two quarter hours. Spring. Nilsson 11. Vocabulary Building. A study of the major New England poets and essayists and of their immediate followers. Three quarter hours. Autumn. Read 22. American Literature: Metropolitan, Southern, and Western. A study of the spread of literary activity and of the development of the novel and the short story after the Civil War. Three quarter hours. Winter. Read 23. American Literature since 1890. A study of contemporary trends in American thought and literary forms as revealed through a reading of representative criticism, poetry, fiction, biography, miscellaneous prose, and drama of the period. Three quarter hours. Spring. Read 25. Children's Literature. A course designed to equip prospective teachers with a knowledge and appreciation of children's literature. Five quarter hours. A study of narrative technique and appreciation of the short story as a literary form. Five quarter hours. Spring. Trevithick 30. Poetry Appreciation. A course designed to give training in the appreciation of poetic expression. Five quarter hours. (Not given 1939-1940). 31. Literature of the Drama. A survey course devoted to critical reading of plays of outstanding dramatic and literary value. Three quarter hours. (May not be given 1939-1940). 39. English Literature. A survey of English literature from 1500 to 1660. A detailed analysis of the form and content of the prose and poetry of the period is made for the purpose of creating an intelligent appreciation of the literature. Three quarter hours. Autumn. Monson 40. English Literature. A survey of English literature from 1660 to 1800. A careful study of the social, philosophical, and political ideas of the period is made in order to clarify the meaning and create an enjoyment of the poetry and prose of the period. Three quarter hours. Winter. Monson 41. English Literature. A survey of English literature from 1798 to 1900. The course is designed to teach the student to appreciate the literature of the major writers of the period. For this reason, considerable time is spent in discussing the social, philosophical, and economic problems which confronted the writers. Emphasis is also placed upon a study of the form and style of this literature. Three quarter hours. Spring. Monson 42. English Literature. The reading and interpretation of representative Shakespearian comedies, tragedies, and historical plays. Five quarter hours. Autumn. Monson 44. Modern British Literature. Designed to familiarize the student with the most noteworthy literary products of England since 1900. Emphasis is placed upon literary styles and upon major problems treated by the best authorities.
