Show Visual Arts Visual Arts General Informatio Option 1 (60 credit hours) minor required: • In addition to the foundation and core requirements (see below), the student is required to take 22 credit hours as outlined in a chosen area of emphasis (except Photography requires 26 credit hours). Option 2 (83 credit hours) no minor required: • Students may request this option after completing the foundation requirement. Students will be admitted into this program by review of their GPA and after receiving a positive recommendation of the art faculty following a portfolio review. • In addition to completing the sixty credit hour requirement as outlined in Option 1, the student will complete another 23 credit hours after being admitted to the Option 2 program. • Specific courses will be determined in consultation with the Chair of the Department. General Requirements: • WSU Core Requirements (see index). • General Education Requirements (see index). • Art majors must have a C or better in major courses. • Art majors must have an overall GPA of 2.00 or C. • 183 total hours are required for a B.S., B.A., or B.F.A. degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). Specific Requirements: Foundation (19 credit hours) for all emphases the freshman year: • Art 108 (3) (offered Autumn quarter only.) • Drawing : Art 111 (4) (offered A, W, & S), 112 (4), (offered Winter and Spring quarters.) • Design : Art 116 (4), 117 (4), (offered Autumn, Winter and Spring quarters). Core for All Emphases: • Art 115 (4), HU201 (4) (not required in Photography), HU202 (4), HU203 (4), 218 (3). Emphasis (Required in addition to foundation and core): Art majors who have completed the foundation and core are permitted to take the 300 level studio class without the 200 prerequisite in Metals/Jewelry, Watercolor Painting, and Weaving. Students who have not completed the foundation and core and who wish to take specialized studio courses must take the 200 level studio course. General Art Emphasis: Option 1 (22 credit hours): Art 260 (4), 270 (4), 312 (3); choose 11 credit hours from the following: Art 220 (4), 231 (4), 242 (3), 243 (4), 335 or 235 (3), 354 or 254 (3), 365 or 265 (3), one class approved by department chair. Option 2: An additional 23 credit hours (see above for details). Art Teaching Emphasis: Option 1 (22 credit hours): Art 251 (3), 351 (3); elect 13 credit hours from the following: Art 220 (4), 231 (4), 242 (3), 243 (4), 335 or 235 (3), 354 or 254 (3), 260 (4), 365 or 265 (3), 270 (4). Support course required: Commun HU102 (3). Support courses recommended: Art 305 (4), 352 (3), 452 (3). Art 351 must be completed prior to commencing student teaching or similar training. Option 2: An additional 23 credit hours (see above for details). The following specifics also apply: The following courses are required as part of the 23 credit hours: Art 305 (4), 352 (3), 452 (3). This is a composite art teaching major. The student must have an emphasis in two of the following areas: ceramics, drawing, graphic design, illustration, jewelry, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, weaving. Two Dimensional Emphasis: Option 1 (22 credit hours): Art 220 (4), 312 (3); one of the following: Art 231 (4), 335 or 235 (3), 354 or 254 (3), 270 (4); one of the following: Art 260 (4), 365 or 265 (3); elect remainder of the credit hours from the following: Art 243 (4), 260 (4), 265 (3), *315 (4), 320 (3), 321 (3), 360 (3), 365 (3), *411 (3), *412 (3), *420 (3), *421 (3), *460 (3), *465 (3), *490 (2-5), *491 (2-5). *may be repeated for credit Option 2: An additional 23 credit hours (see above for details). PROGRAM: ART MAJOR-BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS DEGREE Areas of Emphasis: General Art Two Dimensional Three Dimensional Visual Communications Photography Students may apply for admission into this 109 credit hour degree program after completing the foundation and core requirements. All students applying for admission to this degree program must submit a portfolio of work to be juried by the Department of Visual Arts faculty. Additional requirements: • Art 312 (3) • Art history electives: (9-12 credit hours) • Studio elected specializations (29-35 credit hours) in consultation with department chair • Art 499 (3) • Senior Exhibit PROGRAM: ART COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR-BACHELOR DEGREE (See program requirements in the Composite Teaching Majors section of the College of Education.) PROGRAM:ART DEPARTMENTAL HONORS General Requirements: • Enroll in the General Honors Program and complete at least 10 hours of General Honors courses (see the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog). Specific Requirements: • In fulfilling requirements for an Art major, the honor student must take at least twenty hours of Art courses for honors credit with a minimum of two hours in Art 491 taken as an Honors Senior Project. • The Art Major with a General Art, Art Teaching, Photography, Two Dimensional, Three Dimensional, Visual Communications/Design or Visual Communications/Illustration Emphasis may take any appropriate upper division art or photography course on an honors basis upon departmental and instructor approval. Permission from the department chair should be sought before registering in a course for Honors credit. A written agreement should be obtained from the professor in whose course Honors credit is to be sought. (See the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog.) PROGRAM: ART MINOR General Requirements: • A grade of C or better in all minor courses.
