Introduction to the Visual Arts (3) A, W, S A survey course of the visual arts for the non-art major. HU103. Studio Art for the Non-Art major (3) A general education course for non-art majors which includes a series of hands-on experiences (such as drawing and sculpture) in addition to guided inquiry through visual presentations. For students desiring to broaden their academic background in the areas of visual literacy and problem solving. 108. Art Major Visual Arts Orientation (3) A An introductory visual arts survey and orientation for the incoming art major and minor. 111. Drawing I (4) A, W, S The first drawing class in a series of two that serve as a foundation for art majors. Perceptual and conceptual development stressed. Variety of materials and procedures investigated. 112. Drawing II (4) W,S The second drawing class in a series of two that serve as a foundation for art majors. Perceptual and conceptual development stressed. Variety of materials and procedures investigated. Prerequisite: Art 111 or consent of instructor. 115. Basic Photography (4) A, W, 5 Introduction to black and white photography. Students learn the use of the camera, film and print processing and gain an aesthetic sense of the medium. (Formerly Photo 101) 116. Design: 2D (4) A, W, 5 Introduction to visual language using two dimensional media. This course examines the structure of images and helps the student develop different strategies for interpreting and constructing those that communicate effectively. 117. Design: 3D (4) A, W, 5 The study of fundamental design principles and techniques including working knowledge of various design methods and their relationship to the conceptualization, development and completion of 3-D design projects. 141. Lettering I (3) Introductory pen and brush free-hand lettering structure methods of calligraphy and built-up alphabet forms. HU201. Art and Architecture of the World: Paleolithic-AD 200 (4) A A global survey of the history of art and architecture from BC 15,000 to AD 200. HU202. Art and Architecture of the World: AD 200-1600 (4) W A global survey of the history of art and architecture from AD 200-1600. HU203. Art and Architecture of the World: AD 1600-Present (4) S A global survey of the history of art and architecture from AD 1600-Present. HU204. Introduction to Asian Art (3) A A survey of the arts of Asia including China, Japan and India. 205. Photographing Artwork (1) W Photographing of two- and three-dimensional artwork. Emphasis on slide reproduction including masking and labeling of slides for submission to juried activities and job and graduate school applications. Credit/No Credit. Prerequisite: Art 115 or consent of instructor. 210. Perspective (3) Introduction to various techniques for representing three- dimensional objects and depth relationships on a two-dimensional surface. 215. Intermediate Photography (4) A, W, S Production of high quality black and white photographs, introduction to the zone system of exposure, printing, toning. A highly disciplined craft-oriented course to help develop technical and aesthetic skills in black and white photography. Prerequisites: Art 115 and 116 or consent of instructor; Art 116 not required for non-art majors. (Formerly Photo 201) 218. Color (3) W,S Theory and application of color and design. Prerequisite: Art 116. 220. Introduction to Printmaking (4) A, W An introduction to all printmaking classes covering the processes of intaglio, screenprinting, relief and lithography. Students are provided with the fundamentals of each process and experience with each one. Formerly: Art 222, 223, 224. 225. Photojournalism (4) W Photojournalism and documentary techniques for visual communication. Emphasis on developing sensitivity to and awareness of the emotional impact of photographic images. Prerequisite: Art 115 or consent of instructor. (Formerly Photo 216.) 231. Introduction to Ceramic Art (4) A, W, 5 Introduction to ceramic design (traditional and contemporary), forming techniques (handbuilding and wheelthrowing), and firing processes (raku and stoneware). Formerly Ceramics I. 235. Metals/Jewelry Design I (3) A, W, 5 Introduction to tools, metals and other materials with emphasis on basic techniques and concept development. 241. Lettering II (3) Advanced pen and brush free-hand lettering structure: concentration on design and skill with written forms. Prerequisite: Art 141 or consent of instructor. 242. Computer Aided Art and Design (3) A, W Studio projects in art and design using the computer as a primary tool for drawing and image processing. Prerequisite: Art 116 or consent of instructor. 243. Visual Communications I (4) A Introduction to basic communication/aesthetic/mechanical problems in designing with type and related visual information with orientation to electronic layout tools. 251. Introduction to Art Education (3) A An entry level course to teaching which acquaints students with various aspects of teaching art, including the history of art education, its philosophical premises, the developmental characteristics of learners, and working with art materials. Includes at least 6 hours observation and participation with a variety of populations and educational situations. Prerequisites: Two of the following: Art 108, 111, 112, 116, 117 or consent of instructor. 254. Weaving I (3) A, W, S Introduction to 4-harness floor loom weaving. Includes basic weave and fiber structure and techniques. 260. Painting I (4) A, 5 Introduction to painting including the construction and design of paintings, investigations into the character and actions of various paints and techniques (traditional and contemporary) on a variety of surfaces. 265. Watercolor Painting I (3) A, W, 5 Introduction to watercolor painting. 270. Sculpture I (4) A, W An introduction to contemporary activity in sculpture including projects designed to practice conceptual development, learn technical skills and become an informed participant in three- dimensional art forms. 275. Color Photography I (4) A The theory, creative practice and aesthetics of shooting, developing, printing and presenting prints made from color negatives. Prerequisites: Art 116 and 215 or consent of instructor. (Formerly Photo 210) 283. Directed Readings (1-5) A, W, 5 Individually chosen readings on specialized topics supervised by a faculty member. Prerequisite: Consent of faculty supervisor prior to registration. 289. Cooperative Work Experience (1-3,9 maximum) A, W, S An opportunity for students to receive academic credit for faculty approved on-the-job learning experiences within certain visual arts areas of emphasis. C/NC only. Prerequisites: Instructor approval (before enrollment) and previous or concurrent enrollment in art classes as specified by each area of emphasis. 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) Consult the quarterly class schedule for the current offering under this number. Community Service (3) Students will receive an overview of community service and explore opportunities for service learning in the community.
