All degree programs within the College follow the same general pattern which is composed of five required curricular elements: Liberal Support Curriculum, Business Foundations, Cross- Functional Core, Functional Core, and Major Discipline. Students should complete the Liberal Support Curriculum as soon as possible because the knowledge attained in these courses will be used throughout the business curriculum. The specific courses in the Liberal Support Curriculum are: Math 107 (which must be completed with a grade of C or higher), English 111 and 112 (which must be completed with a 2.65 GPA), Botany LSI40, Psychology SSI01, and Sociology SS101. Importantly, many of the courses in the Liberal Support Curriculum may be used to satisfy specific university and general education requirements. However, students within the College of Business and Economics must complete the specific courses within the Liberal Support Curriculum. Business Foundations The Business Foundations Curriculum provides the base for all business and economic degree programs. Students should complete the Business Foundations Curriculum early in their studies. All students must complete Business Foundations (with a GPA of 2.5) before registering for upper-division classes in the College of Business and Economics (these are classes with course numbers of 301 or higher.) The Business Foundations Curriculum is comprised of: Acctg 201, Econ 202, Econ SS203, and Quant 260. These courses must be completed with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. In addition, students must complete an exam which demonstrates computer competency. Cross-Functional Core The Cross-Functional Core provides the competencies needed to analyze problems and interact with individuals from different units of an organization. The focus of the Cross-Functional Core is upon analysis, problem solving, communication and planning. You should begin course work in the Cross-Functional Core when you have completed, or nearly completed, the Business Foundations coursework. Specific classes within the Cross-Functional Core are: Quant 240 and 261; BusAdm 320, 333, and 462; and an international course chosen from either Econ 311, Econ 312, Mgmt 420 or Log 455. These courses must be completed with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. You will continue taking courses in this area throughout your undergraduate program. Many of the courses in the Cross-Functional Core are prerequisites for other classes. Keep this in mind as you plan your schedule; the College advisor will be happy to help you with this. The final course in the Cross-Functional Core is BA 478: Strategic Management; to attain the most benefit you should register for this course near the conclusion of your studies. Functional Core The Functional Core exposes students to the traditional functional areas of business. Courses within the Functional Core include: Acctg 202, Acctg 230, Fin 320, Mgmt 312, Mgmt 364, and Mktg 301. Everyone working in business needs a knowledge of these areas. Courses within the Functional Core must be completed with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Students should take course work within the Functional Core as they are completing the courses within the Major Discipline. Many of the courses in the Functional Core are prerequisites for other classes. Keep this in mind as you plan your schedule. Major Discipline Different majors within the College of Business designate different course work within the Major Discipline. You should consult pages 140 through 155 of this catalog for the Major course work required in Accounting, Information Systems & Technologies, Economics, Finance, Logistics, Management, and Marketing. Importantly, students should begin taking courses within their major area before completing all of the courses in the Cross-Functional and Functional Cores. Graduation Requirements: 1. GPA Requirement - Candidates for the bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree must complete the Business Foundations, Functional Core Requirements, the Cross-Functional Core Requirements, and the Major Discipline Requirements with a minimum GPA of 2.5 in each area. 2. Residency Requirement - Candidates for the bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree must complete a minimum of 45 credit hours and 50 percent of their major requirements within the College of Business and Economics. Students must be registered at Weber State at least one quarter following the last commencement prior to graduation. A waiver of this requirement must be obtained from the department chair and the dean. 3. Non-business Course Requirements - To encourage business students to seek non-business courses and thereby broaden their educational experience, the following requirements are established: a. Business majors must take at least 74 credit hours (40 percent of 183 required hours) outside the College of Business and Economics. Student Services Interdisc.
