| Description |
Stanley Purrington was originally from Ogden, Utah and joined the Army in 1918. He and sixty other young men from Ogden were sent to Camp Fremont, California for training. Upon completion of his training he was dispatched to France to become part of the occupying forces at Camp Pontanezen. During his time there, he was a battalion sergeant major in the 8th Infantry. Purrington returned home to Ogden on August 30, 1919. The diaries in this collection detail his time in service from August 12, 1918 to March 26, 1919 and May 29, 1919 to Sept. 28, 1919, along with his experiences overseas. The view book includes photographs and postcards collected by Purrington during his time in Europe as well as some biographical information. |

Black leather covered journal. The black dye has worn away in spots to reveal the original brown of the leather and the paper inside is no longer attached to the cover, though the sturdy sewn binding has held all the pages together. This journal measures 7 inches long, 4 inches wide and 1/2 inch tall when closed. 44 double sided pages are covered in cursive text written with pen and ink. Twelve blank double sided pages at the end of the book were not scanned. |

Show London England May 31st 1919 We sailed from Le Havre at 6:30 last evening arriving at Southampton about 2.AM but couldn’t dock until 8:00 this morning. The boat was a little old trip used for transporting soldiers and was crowded with Tommies going back to Blighty and Yanks on leave. There was no place to sleep so I nosed around and finally went to roost in a box of Life Preservers on the deck to the amazement of a Tommy standing by who remarked as I disappeared into the box: -- “Well you damn Yanks will get anywhere.” It wasn’t such a bad spot either after I got things arranged a little The Channel was quite choppy and Woody got quite seasick London 5/31-19 (Cont’d) as well as a number of the Tommies. We waited for an hour or so for the soldiers to get their papers checked then took train for London arriving at about 2:15 P.M. Here again the “Y” man was on the job and their truck took us to their famous Eagle Hut on the Strand Here we got vouchers for Half fare rates on all the railroads in Great Britian , washed up, had dinner, then took a taxi ride around the city to pass the time away. We afterward met a couple of quite sweet little girls, mine was named “Kittie” They wanted our company for the evening but we are to see them next Thursday Evening on the Strand. As we come back to see London |
