Show Secondary Education Education Courses General Information PROGRAM: SECONDARY EDUCATION CERTIFICATION General Requirements: | • WSU Core Requirements (see index). • General Education Requirements (see index; see recommended courses on Secondary Education requirement sheets). • See Secondary Education requirement sheets. • Admission and Retention Standards requirements for the Department of Teacher Education. • The academic teaching major and teaching minor must consist of not less than 45 and 24 quarter hours respectively, or a composite major of at least 69 hours. • The teaching major and teaching minor must be in subjects taught in Utah public secondary schools. Either the major or minor must be a subject which Utah secondary schools are required to teach (those marked with double asterisks do not satisfy this second requirement-see below). • Secondary Education students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher in all college work and at least a B- in each professional education course to continue in the program. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division education credit (courses numbered 300 and above). Specific Requirements: • Support courses required: Commun HU 102, or 107, or 307; CHFAM/SS 150, or PSYCH 314, or CHFAM 450 • Professional Education courses required: Level 1: Educ 300 (2), 301 (3), 303 (3), 304 (3) Level 2: Educ 307 (3), 315 (3), 365 (3) Level 3: Educ 416 (3), 462 (3), 463 (3) Level 4: Educ 495 (12), 499 (3) • Admission to teacher education is required prior to enrollment in 300 level and above education classes. Teaching Majors and Minors The student will be assigned an in the academic teaching major and an also education adviser. Advisement should be sought as needed from a faculty member in the student's academic teaching minor. Special Education- Mild/Moderate Endorsement The Department of Teacher Education offers course work leading to a Special Education-Mild/Moderate endorsement. This endorsement allows the holder to teach mild and moderately disabled students kindergarten through twelfth grade. The Special Education-Mild/Moderate endorsement may be earned concurrently with the Early Childhood, Elementary Education, or Secondary certification. Special education courses taken in the early childhood and elementary education content area of specialization may count toward the endorsement. Secondary education students completing the special education teaching minor receive the endorsement and also are allowed to teach reading in the secondary school. Check at the Teacher Education Advisement Center for Special Education course schedule. Admission Requirements: • Students must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program or to the M.Ed, program, or have a current teaching credential. • Teachers holding a current teaching credential who are only seeking the Special Education endorsement must make application through the Department of Teacher Education Admission Office and complete a separate admissions procedure. • Computer literacy Specific Requirements: • Educ 365 (3), 451 (3), 452 (3), 453 (3), 454 (3), 455 (3), 461 (4), 467 (4) • Educ 479 (6) for early childhood and elementary majors; secondary students teach half-time in Special Education in Educ 495. • Secondary Education minors must take Educ 465 and either Educ 490 (3) or 590 (3) and one additional elective credit from an approved list. The requirements for this Endorsement may change as the program is revised to meet the needs of employing districts and state certification requirements. EDUCATION COURSES-EDUC 200. Social Studies Concepts for Elementary Teachers (4) Su, A, W, S Fundamental concepts from the social sciences commonly found in elementary social studies curriculum. 289. Cooperative Work Experience (1-9) 5a, A., W, S For students not yet accepted to the Teacher Education Program who meet the minimum cooperative work experience requirements of the department. Provides academic credit for on- the-job experience. Amount of credit will be determined by the department. 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) Consult the quarterly class schedule for the current offering under this number. The specific title and credit authorized will appear on the student transcript. May be taken on a Credit/No Credit basis. 300. Interpersonal Skills for Teachers (2) Su, A, W, S Experiences intended to develop basic skills in personal interaction and adaptation to teaching. Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education. Should be taken concurrently with EDUC 301, 303, 304. Available on a CR/NC basis only. 301. Educational Psychology (3) Su, A, W, S Fundamental concepts and processes related to human behavior and learning. Perquisite: Admission to Teacher Education. Should be taken concurrently with EDUC 300, 303, 304. 303. Instructional Technology (3) Su,A, W, S Basic concepts, techniques, and applications of media materials and computers in the classroom. Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education. Should be taken concurrently with EDUC 300,301,304. 304. Foundations of Education (3) Explores the history and philosophy of education and related schooling issues. Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education Program. Should be taken concurrently with EDUC 300, 301, 303. 306. Elementary Reading Methods (4) A, W, S Methods and materials to teach developmental reading in the elementary school. Recommended prerequisites: EDUC 300, 301, 303, 304. Should be taken concurrently with EDUC 307, 315,365. 307. Multicultural/Bilingual Education (3) Rational, concepts, and practice provides a scope of understanding regarding the role of cultural and language pluralism in school and in our society. Recommended prerequisites: EDUC 300, 301, 303, 304. Should be taken concurrently with EDUC 315, 365, and EDUC 306 if elementary education major. 315. Curriculum Design and Assessment (3) Principles and skills for preparation, planning, and evaluating classroom instruction. Recommended prerequisites: Recommended prerequisites: EDUC 300, 301, 303, 304. Should be taken concurrently with EDUC 307, 365, and 306 if elementary major. 320. Applications of Microcomputers in Education (3) Provides students with methods of incorporating microcomputers into the field of Education. 339. Teaching Reading in the Primary Grades (3) A, S Analysis of developmental reading skills with emphasis on readiness for reading, phonic and structural analysis, word recognition, use of the basal reader, and reading for various purposes. Prerequisites: Educ 306 or permission of instructor. 340. Content Reading Instruction Grades 3-8 (3) Development of reading abilities and study skills in content subject areas. Prerequisite: EDUC 306 or EDUC 462. 343. Creative Processes in the Elementary School (3) Su, A,W,S Development of attitudes, methods and skills in creative teaching.
