Show History History • General Information 350. Geography of Utah (3) S A study of the physical environment and activities of man in Utah. Prerequisite: Geography PS 101. 354. Geography of Latin America (5) 359. Geography of Europe (5) W 362. Geography of Russia and the Former USSR (3) 364. Geography of the Middle East (3) 365. Geography of India and Southeast Asia (3) 366. Geography of China and Japan (3) S 374. Geography of Africa (5) 378. Geographic Area Studies (1-5) Surveys different geographic areas and regions of the world. When this number is used it will be accompanied by a descriptive title and the credit authorized, which will appear on the student's transcript. May be repeated for credit when a different title is used. 381. History of Geographic Thought (3) A A study of the development of the science of geography, giving attention to its changes in emphasis and philosophy. Prerequisite: Junior standing. 421. Introduction to Computer Mapping and Geographic Information Systems (3) A This course is designed to introduce students to principals of computer mapping and geographic information systems (GIS). It examines the nature of data capture and database models as well as various systems of analysis and mapping outputs. Three lectures per week. (Same as Geosc 421). 422. Technical Issues in GIS (4) W This course deals with GIS algorithms, data structures, advanced computational topics and analysis of error. Labs include technical programming exercises. Two lectures and two 3-hour labs per week. (Same as Geosc 422). Prerequisite: Geogr 421 or Geosc 421. 423. Application Issues in GIS (4) S This course explores operational and management issues. Ways in which traditional planning and management theories and techniques can be implemented in GISs are examined. Practical work includes analytical exercises using spatial analysis techniques and GIS products in management/planning contexts or related research. Two lectures and two 3-hour labs per week. (Same as Geosc 423). Prerequisite Geogr 422 or Geosc 422. 480. Special Problems (1-5) Su, A, W, S A personalized course designed to foster individual research and scientific writing. 489. Cooperative Work Experience (1-9) Su, A, W, S A continuation of Geography 289. Open to all students. 492. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) (Offered as needed) Consult the quarterly class schedule for the current offering under this number. The specific title and credit authorized will appear on the student transcript. 495. Advanced Regional Field Studies (1-5) S A directed study of specific geographic regions utilizing field observations, lectures, and individual student research. Prerequisite: a general course in Geography or consent of the instructor. 499. Seminar (3) W A course for senior students in which basic research methods are applied to geographic problems. 503. Geography for Teachers (3-5) (Offered as needed) Science content course for teachers in the M.Ed. Science Emphasis Program. To register, select another departmental course and develop a contract detailing additional work required for graduate credit. Course may be repeated. Contract must be approved by instructor, department chair, and Director of the Master of Education Program. Padgett Description History is a record of political, social and cultural events and achievements of humankind. Historians analyze and evaluate this record in an attempt to understand and interpret the present. The history offerings are designed to: provide adequate programs to prepare teachers; prepare students who plan to do graduate work; and provide courses which contribute to the general education of all students. PROGRAM: HISTORY MAJOR AND HISTORY TEACHING MAJOR BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: • WSU Core Requirements (see index). • General Education Requirements (see index). • A minor is required. • History majors must have a C or better in major courses. • An overall GPA of 2.00 or C is required. (All teaching majors must achieve an overall 3.00 GPA.) • 183 total hours required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division. (Courses numbered 300 and above.) • Transferring students with History majors must take at least two approved History courses at Weber State. Students who are History teaching majors must satisfy Teacher Education admission and certification requirements (See Teacher Education Program). Specific Requirements: • Minimum of 55 credit hours in History courses, with 30 hours of upper division work. • History courses required (28 credit hours): Hist SS101 (4), SS102 (4), SS103 (4), SS/SB170 (5), 200 (3), 270 (5) - (should be taken before upper-division coursework; Libsci PD101 and Engl EN112 are prerequisites); Hist 499 (3) - (should be taken during the Senior year; Hist 200 is a prerequisite). • Balance of the program (27 hours) must include at least one course from each of the three areas: United States: Hist 305 (3), 307 (3), 309 (3), 312 (3), 313 (5), 315 (3), 319 (5), 326 (3), 375 (3), 415 (3), 420 (5), 422 (5), 423 (3), 425 (5), 426 (3), 427 (3), 428 (3), 429 (3). Europe: Hist 341 (5), 342 (3), 430 (5), 431 (5), 432 (5), 433 (5), 440 (5), 442 (3), 443 (3), 444 (3), 450 (3), 451 (3), 459 (3). Third World: Hist 301 (5), 374 (5), 460 (5), 461 (5), 465 (3), 470 (5), 471 (5), 472 (5), 473 (5). • Additional history courses to elect from: Hist 481 (1-5), 483 (1-2), 489 (1-9), 493 (1-5), 495 (1-5), 498 (2). • Support courses: History majors and History Teaching majors are encouraged to take Poise SS/SB 110 (5); Teaching Majors must take Commun HU102 (3) or its equivalent and Educ 450 (3). History Teaching majors must take Hist 427 (3), 428 (3) or 429 (3). It is strongly recommended that students who plan to work for an advanced degree in History study a foreign language during the undergraduate years and take a course relating to the use of computers. PROGRAM: HISTORY DEPARTMENTAL HONORS General Requirements: • Enroll in General Honors Program and complete at least 10 hours of General Honors courses (see the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog). Maintain an overall GPA of 3.3. • Fulfill requirements for History departmental or teaching major. Specific Requirements: • In fulfilling requirements for a History major, take at least twenty hours of History courses on an Honors basis. • Take an additional 2 hours in a History Honors senior project course. A student may receive History Honors credit in any upper division History course including: Directed Readings Hist 483 (for a maximum total of 5 hours). Permission from the department chair should be sought before registering in a course for Honors credit. A written agreement should be reached with the appropriate professor regarding the work expected for Honors credit. (See the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog.) PROGRAM: HISTORY MINOR General Requirements: • A grade of C or better in minor courses. • Transferring students with History minors must take at least one approved History course at Weber State. Specific Requirements: • Minimum of 30 credit hours in History courses.
