Show 32 WEBER COLLEGE - OGDEN, UTAH Letterman, Orion, Weber, and Phi Rho Pi are honorary organizations. The Letterman Club is an honorary organization, membership being based upon the point system according to activities and scholarship. The Orion Club and the Weber Club are honorary, their membership being restricted to meritorious students who annually win awards in recognition of their service to the student body. Phi Rho Pi is a national honorary forensic fraternity, its membership being restricted to students receiving honors in debate activities of the college. Clubs and student body units sponsor a choice dance program. The social calendar is rich in its offering of planned affairs. One of the outstanding features is the high quality dance program sponsored by the active clubs and student body units of the college. Once a year each social club: Excelsior, Frenisti, Otyokwa, LaDianaeda, Chanodo, Sigma Delta Pi, Skull, Vikings, and Phoenix, is host to a choice social evening of dancing. During the year different student body units sponsor traditional dances of an informal and formal nature. In the autumn quarter are scheduled the President's Reception, the Associated Women Student's Ball and the Christmas Dance; in the Winter quarter, the Associated Women Students' Ball, the Acorn Dance, and the College Prom; in the spring quarter, the Associated Women Student's Spring Formal, and the Reception to the Graduates. Class Activities Participation in music offers opportunities for the development of group organizations, and of vocal and instrumental soloists. Each year the classes in music concentrate their efforts upon the development and presentation of a standard light opera and an original musical continuity. The Symphony Orchestra, the Band, and the combined Glee Clubs present an evening of music each quarter. The Musettes, the Dorian Singers, and the instrumental and vocal quartets, trios, and duets are composed of students of exceptional talent. Throughout the state they represent the college in musical activities. The band and orchestra function prominently in school activities. The orchestra strives toward the artistic rendition of overtures and symphonies and takes an active part in the presentation of the college opera. Speech offers opportunity for student participation in plays, college assemblies, and radio programs. The instructor of Speech supervises the production of plays and directs all speech activities other than debate. Play Production: Three full-length plays, together with a varied number of one-act plays, are presented annually. In these productions qualified speech majors are called upon to assist in various phases of the production, including work as assistant-directors. In instances of opera presentations, those interested in speech may forego production of a major play during the quarter and unite their efforts with those interested in musical activities. Speech Activities: (1) Extempore Speaking: the James L. Barker Contest is designed to stimulate interest in extempore speech and to encourage competition between freshmen and sophomore students. WEBER COLLEGE - OGDEN, UTAH 33 The winner of this contest is honored by having his class numerals engraved on a silver cup, and by receiving an individual cash award of ten dollars provided by the donor, Professor James L. Barker. Impromptu Speaking: The Anderson Jewelry Co. Award is intended to foster impromptu speech competition among individual participants. The winner of this contest is presented with a gold medal. Oratory: Each year the instructor and students of speech conduct a major inter-collegiate oratorical contest on the general subject "Americanism." This contest is sponsored by the Ogden Junior Chamber of Commerce in the interest of American ideals, and provides as a permanent college possession, a gold cup on which is inscribed the name of the winner, together with his class numerals. The contest in Extempore Speech, Oratory, and Impromptu Speaking are conducted before special assemblies held for the entire student body and invited guests. Additional minor contests are conducted within speech classes as a part of class activities. Students who distinguish themselves in public speaking are given opportunity to qualify for contests held with other colleges both within the state and elsewhere. Students who distinguish themselves in speech activities may achieve membership in the local chapter of the national Phi Rho Pi honorary forensic society. The Department of English offers opportunities for participation in student publications and forensics. The Department of English supervises all student publications. The Acorn is the college annual. Participation in this activity gives students two kinds of experience: editorial and business. Editorial work consists of planning the book, arranging art designs, pictures, cover and format, generally; of writing resumes of the year's activities, and of copy and proof reading. Business involves making contracts for photography, printing and engraving, soliciting, advertising, and selling the book. The Weber College Signpost is the student body newspaper. It is an eight-column, four-page publication printed on the presses of the Ogden Standard-Examiner at two-week intervals. It is written and edited by the students of English 6, 7, and 8, although any member of the student body may become a staff member by application and regular contribution. Scribulus, the college quarterly, serves a three-fold purpose: first, it provides practical periodical experience for those whose primary interests are in creative work; second, it stimulates the student body generally to self-expression; and third, it gives a more utilitarian purpose to class exercises in composition. The Department of English sponsors debate and cooperates with the instructor of Speech in extempore and oratory. The Department of English directs all debating activities of the student body. Debating has as its curricular basis a course in argumentation. Those who represent the college in interscholastic competition are chosen upon merit from the college generally. Participation in three intercollegiate debates or discussions makes a student eligible for membership in the Utah Alpha chapter of the national Phi Rho Pi honorary debating society. |
