Advanced French. A review of the rules of French grammar, conversation drill based on reading, and extensive reading for the purpose of enabling students to read French easily and fluently without constant reference to a dictionary. Five quarter hours. Spring. Barker 20. Modern French Literature. A course devoted to class and collateral reading for students desiring fluency in the actual use of language. Prerequisite: French 6 or three units of French. Five quarter hours. (May not be given 1940-1941). Barker 21. Modern French Literature. A course devoted to the study of standard authors and to the development of comprehension and literary appreciation. Five quarter hours. (May not be given 1940-1941). Barker 22. A study of the elements of natural environment and their influences in determining the activities and cultural patterns of man. Five quarter hours. Autumn, Winter. Buss 2. Geography of Utah. A general cultural course designed to provide a better knowledge and appreciation of the national environmental features of the state and their influences on the people. The phsysiographic features are emphasized. One all-day field trip required. Recommended for all Education students. Three quarter hours. Spring. Buss Geology Walter Richard Buss Orlo Eckersley Childs It is recommended that a student pursuing a major in Geology complete Geology 1, 3, 5, 7, and Chemistry 1 and 2, or 4 and 5. Geology majors are expected to attend meetings of the Geology Club held twice a month. The Geology Club is composed of geology majors and other interested students. 1. Physical Geology. A course concerned with the work of the surface subterranean agencies which affect the earth's crust; the structural WEBER COLLEGE - OGDEN, UTAH 65 history of mountain ranges, and the development of ore deposits. Utah geology is emphasized, especially the erosion cycle and the phases of economic importance. Field trips required. Five quarter hours. Autumn, Winter, Spring. Buss, Childs 2. Physical Geology. A detailed discussion of the elementary features of structural and dynamic geology. Five trips and written reports are required. The course is designed for Engineering and Forestry students. Four lectures and one laboratory period a week. It is re commended that Physics and Chemistry be taken previously or concurrently with the course. Five quarter hours. Autumn. Childs 3. Historical Geology. A study of the geological formation, the areal distribution of the larger units, and the characteristic plant and animal fossils of each, with particular reference to North America and Europe. Field trips required. Prerequisite: Geology 1. Five quarter hours. Winter. Buss 5. Rocks and Rock Minerals. A study of the origin, composition, and classification of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, and their constituent minerals. Field trips and rock collection required. Three lectures and one laboratory period a week. Four quarter hours. Autumn, Spring. Childs 7. Minerology of Ore Minerals. A study of the common ore minerals. Simple crystallography, blowpipe analysis, and other megascopic characteristics necessary to identification are considered. Prerequisites: Geology 1, and Chemistry 1 and 2. One lecture and two laboratory periods a week. Three quarter hours. Winter Childs 8. Minerology of Rock Minerals. A continuation of Geology 7. Primary consideration is given to rock-making minerals. One lecture and two laboratory periods a week. Three quarter hours. Spring. Childs German Nancy Montgomery Barker It is recommended that a student pursuing a major in the Foreign Languages complete two years of one foreign language. 1. Elementary German. A course providing for instruction and extensive practice in grammar, reading, conversation, and dictation, with a view to the development of ability to use German without translation.
