Training 41; those who have completed one year of shorthand should not register for Sec. Training 31. ♦♦♦Students satisfactorily completing Sec. Training 37 may waive this requirement. TWO YEAR PROGRAM IN SECRETARIAL TRAINING The following curriculum is suggested to the student in Secretarial Training who does not plan to transfer to a senior college or university or to graduate with an Associate of Science degree, but who desires to qualify for the Certificate of Completion. Tr. 26 Business 21-22 Stenography Applied Shorthand Transcription 3 Typewriting 1-15 Office Procedures 5 Calculators 2-4 Courses to be selected from the list on pages 39-44 of the catalog. The courses must be chosen from at least 3 of the 4 areas of Humanities, Life Science, Physical Science, and Social Science (including Eco-. nomics 1) with a minimum of 20 hours in these four areas. Completion of at least 90 quarter hours of approved college work, exclusive of physical education is required. To complete 90 quarter hours of college work, exclusive of physical education, it is recommended that girls choose some electives from the following suggested classes:' Family Life 2 (Food Selection), Family Life 18 (Personal Development), Family Life 33 (Preparation for Marriage), Family Life 35 (Child Development), and Family Life 21 (Basic Clothing Construction). ♦Students satisfactorily completing Sec. Training 37 may waive this requirement. ♦♦A student completing Sec. Tr. 34, 35, 36, 44, 45, 46, during the freshman year may substitute electives for these courses the sophomore year. Electives 09- COURSES OF INSTRUCTION Stenography *31. Elementary Shorthand (Gregg). Introduction to the theory of shorthand. Unless the student has had some typewriting, Secretarial Training 41 must be taken concurrently. Five quarter hours. Autumn, Winter. (Evening school, three quarter hours.) Henrie ♦♦82. Elementary Shorthand Continued (Gregg). A continuation of Secretarial Training 31 with the use of the entire shorthand theory in practice dictation. Shorthand speed of at least 60 words a minute should be attained. Five quarter hours. Winter, Spring (Evening School, three quarter hours.) Henrie 33. Theory Review, Speed Development, and Transcription. Shorthand speed of at least 80 words a minute should be attained. Prerequisite: Secretarial Training 32, 43 or equivalent. Five quarter hours. Autumn, Winter, Spring. (Evening School, three quarter hours.) Henrie 84. Speed Building and Transcription. Speed dictation with stress on fluency and accuracy of writing. Stenographic shortcuts, abbreviations, phrases. Mailable transcripts with emphasis on spelling, punctuation, typing, vocabulary. Shorthand speed of at least 100 words a minute should be attained to receive credit. Prerequisite: Secretarial Training 33, 42, or equivalent. Five quarter hours. Autumn, Winter, Spring. (Evening School, three quarter hours.) Henrie 35. Speed Building and Transcription. A continuation of Secretarial Training 34. Shorthand speed of at least 120 words a minute should be attained. Five quarter hours. Autumn, Winter, Spring. (Evening School, three quarter hours.) Henrie 36. Speed Building and Transcription. A continuation of Secretarial Training 35. (Some legal and medical dictation.) Shorthand speed of at least 140 words a minute should be attained. Five quarter hours. Winter, Spring. (Evening School, three quarter hours.) Henrie 87. Applied Shorthand Transcription. Practical application of shorthand, transcription. Review of punctuation, grammar, capitalization, etc., relating to mailable transcripts. Prerequisite: Shorthand speed of 80-100 or above; typewriting speed 40 or above. Three quarter hours. Autumn, Winter, Spring. Staff 38. Hi-Speed Longhand (ABC Shorthand). A method of fast writing based on the English alphabet. Abbreviations, omissions and blending of letters. Dictation and transcription. Prerequisite: Secretarial Training 42 or equivalent. This class continues in to Sec. Tr. 33. Three quarter hours. Autumn, Winter, Spring. Henrie ♦Credit will not be given to students who have had one year previous shorthand training. ♦♦Credit will not be given to students who have had two years previous shorthand training. |
