Humanities. (Introduction to Literature.) A general course designed to develop an appreciation of the short story, the novel, the drama, and poetry. It emphasizes the aesthetic qualities of these forms and treats them as social forces in our democracy. The course is carefully integrated with Humanities 1 and 2, which develop an appreciation for music and art. Three quarter hours. Van Wagoner It is recommended that a student majoring in art select as his major field one of the following: Fine Art, Commercial Art, or Art as a Teaching Major. A fine arts major should include Art 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 11, 21, and 26. A commercial art major should include Art 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11, 34, 36, 41, 42. An art teaching major should include Art 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 11, 14, 21, 26, 31, 32. Two-year full time specialization courses in Sign Writing and Outdoor Advertising, Fashion Drawing, Illustration Design, Advertising Design, and Painting are also available. Students desiring such courses should consult the head of the department. COURSES OF INSTRUCTION Art 1. Elementary Design and Nature Appreciation. A course for beginners, based upon accepted principles of design, which includes space devisions, proportion, balance, rhythm, emphasis, subordination, etc.; and the use of form in nature as a source of motifs. Two lectures and one laboratory period a week. Three quarter hours. Autumn. Van Wagoner 2. Design and Color. Various color theories; analyzes harmony and discord in color, and includes the appreciation and use of color in design form. Two lectures and one laboratory period a week. Prerequisite: Art 1. Three quarter hours. Winter. Groberg, Van Wagoner 3. Advanced Design. A continuation of Art 2 involving more advanced problems, with emphasis on their application to industry, interior decoration, crafts, architecture and commercial and fine art. Three quarter hours. Spring. Staff 4. Elementary Perspective. Parallel, oblique, and cylindrical perspective. Adapted to the needs of students of art and architecture. Three quarter hours. Autumn. Groberg 75 5. Artistic Anatomy. A study of bone and muscle structure in the human machine. Three quarter hours. Spring. Collett, Strong 6. Art for Teaching. Training in various aspects of art deemed necessary for elementary teachers. It covers such topics as design, drawing, perspective and lettering; and gives the student a working knowledge of various materials and methods such as water-color, crayon, clay, etc. For majors in the field of education. Three quarter hours. Spring. Van Wagoner 7. Printmaking. An introductory class in the Graphic Arts, with special emphasis given to relief printing and to serigraph printing. Three quarter hours. Autumn, Winter, Spring. Van Wagoner 8. Basic Rendering. (Pencil, pen and ink.) The technique of pencil rendering and pen and ink rendering. Open to all students, but designed particularly for art majors and majors in architecture. Three quarter hours. Winter. Collett, Strong 9. Basic Rendering. (Wash.) The technique of opaque and transparent wash. This class is designed particularly to fit the needs of art majors and majors in architecture, but is open to general students. Prerequisite: Art 8. Three quarter hours. Spring. Collett, Strong 11. General Drawing. For all students who wish to draw, but are not interested in art as a major field. The course is exploratory and one of appreciation as well as one which affords the student an opportunity to draw. Three quarter hours. Autumn, Winter, Spring. Groberg, Strong 14. Life Drawing. Elementary drawing emphasizing proportion, animation and structure of the figure. Three quarter hours. Winter, Spring. Groberg, Strong 15. Life Drawing. Figure drawing with more careful consideration given to the rendering in various black and white media. Three quarter hours. Autumn, Winter. Groberg, Strong 16. Head Drawing. Drawing and painting the human head. Emphasis on form and character. An opportunity to study racial, age, and sex differences in heads. Three quarter hours. Spring. Collett, Strong 17. Introductory Ceramics. A beginning course in ceramics. Slab, coil rolling and pinch methods taught, but with emphasis upon experimentation. Six clock hours per week. Three hours credit.
