Show The Pioneer Post Volume VI Issue 11 Marriott-Slaterville City Newsletter November 2004 1140 West 400 North - Phone 627-1919 Fall Report It has been a busy year at the city office. In keeping the community informed on the status of some local issues of interest I give this report. Overall, crime statistics are down from years previous. I appreciate the efforts of our sheriff's office and Neighborhood Watch in this area. However, theft and burglary seem to still occur too often in our community. Families and businesses have been victimized in these needless acts. Please lock your doors, secure your valuables, and watch for suspicious activities. When you see something you think is not right, report it to the sheriff's dispatch. In case you do not feel it appropriate to call 9-1-1 for a suspicious activity, call non-emergency atch at 629-8221. We hope to have a new-city office in the coming year. City leaders have saved money for several years now for a new building that will include a senior center. With the assistance of a senior center grant and with the revenue saved by the city administration, this new building will become reality. It is expected that this new building will be constructed without any loans, bonds, or other debt. Currently, the city has no loans or bonds, and I hope to keep things that way. If there is something you would like to see as part of this new municipal center let me know. Individuals have already expressed interest in having enough room to host senior citizen activities and having plenty of trees with nice landscaping. As another costs saving measure, I have worked with local mayors in the county to explore a county-wide recreation program. This program will look at recreation options for underutilized facilities and programs. Each mayor has asked its parks and recreation official to service on a intra-city committee for this issue. Jim Ito will represent Marriott-Slaterville on this committee. is expect to be complete by January 2005. I do not anticipate any revenue problems because sales tax revenue was better than expected the last quarter of the fiscal year that ended in June 2004. With careful management, expenditures were also down. As you may already know, the state is having a difficult time keeping up with its transportation needs. The state lacks funds to cover all its projects. I have been involved with other local mayors to try to keep state road projects from being cut in Weber County. However, the state's transportation problems are significant. We will likely see the legislature weigh in on this matter at its 2005 session. As far as the city is concerned, it is doing its part to keep city roads in good repair. Now, as winter approaches costs increase depending on the severity of the snow season. 1200 West (Tomlinson Road) was patched and repaired this spring after damage last winter. More extensive repairs on this road may happen next summer because of heavy wear specifically between 700 South and 12th Street. Our city has never had representation as a voting member on the board for Central Weber Sewer District. I have worked diligently for years to get representation on that board. Recently, my request was granted with a voting seat on that board. This seat will allow the city to address its issues on that board. Let me say a few words regarding water conservation. Our water district users deserve to be informed of their accomplishment in water conservation. I serve on the board for Bona Vista Water, where I recently learned that our water users conserved 78 acre feet of water in August 2004 compared to August 2002. This conservation translates into people heeding the drought warnings and consuming less water. Thank you for your conservation efforts, keep it up! annual independent audit is now being performed. It As you might know, Kim Slater represents our community on the board for the Mosquito Abatement |
