Sline; Lecturer: Nicholas Coburn-Palo Description The Department of Communication includes four areas of emphasis: Broadcasting, Oral Communication, Journalism, and Public Relations. A bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science degree is offered in Communication with any of the above emphases. Students majoring in the communication programs receive a thorough orientation in the process and roles of interpersonal and mass communication. Students develop skill in fact finding, analysis, and written and oral communication. Departmental minors are prepared to make a communicative contribution with their major field, whether that communication is oral or written. Minor programs in the department also provide valuable complementary training for majors in business, education, humanities, the sciences, and technology. The Department of Communication also provides service courses to help students from other departments develop desired communication skills. Obsolete Credit Credit earned more than ten (10) years earlier than the proposed date of graduation will not be accepted for the major, minor or BIS concentration in Communication unless validated through a challenge examination or department chair approval. PROGRAM: COMMUNICATION MAJOR- BACHELOR DEGREE (Bachelor of Arts Degree Recommended) Requirements for Admission to Major: To be admitted as a major in the Department of Communication, students must have completed the following requirements: 1. Complete four of the five courses listed below with an overall grade point average of 2.5 and at least a grade of C in all the listed courses: Commun HU102, HU105, 106, 112,113. 2. Achieve a grade point average of 2.5 or higher in 45 credit hours. 3. Meet the WSU Core requirements for English and Mathematics competency. To enroll in 300 and 400 level classes in the Department of Communication, a student must be admitted as a major or hold upper division standing in the university. General Requirements: • WSU Core Requirements (see index). • General Education Requirements (see index). • A minor is required. A student may not receive both a major and a minor in the Department of Communication. • Communication major must have a C or better in major courses. • Communication majors must have an overall GPA of 2.00 orC. 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). • Students must successfully complete at least 50 percent of their Communication coursework at Weber State University in order to receive a major or a minor in Communication. Specific Requirements: • Minimum of 60 credit hours in Communication courses. • Communication courses required for all areas of emphasis: Commun HU102 (3), HU105 (3), 106 (3), 112 (3), and 113(5). The following emphases are offered: Broadcasting (43 credit hours): • Communication courses required (34 credit hours): Commun 170 (3), 271 (3), 272 (3), 275 (3), 365 (5), 372 (2), 373 (3), 374 (3), 375 (3), 475 (3), 476 (3). • Communication courses to elect from: (9 credit hours from Communication courses in consultation with an advisor). Oral Communication (43 credit hours): • Communication courses required (33 credit hours): Commun 107 (4), 214 (3), 215 (3), 220 (4), 305 (3), 312 (3), 355 (3), 380 (3), 415 (5), 499 (2). • Communication courses to elect from: (10 credit hours from Communication courses in consultation with an adviser). Journalism (43 credit hours): • Communication courses required (34 credit hours): Commun 235 (3), 289 (4), 313 (3), 314 (3), 319 (3), 322 (3), 365, (5), 374 (3), 499 (2); Art 115 (5). • Communication courses to elect from: (9 credit hours from Communication courses in consultation with an adviser). All journalism students must be able to type proficiently. Public Relations (43 credit hours): • Communication courses required (32 credit hours): Commun 235 (3), 240 (3), 289 (4), 322 (3), 340 (3), 365 (5), 374 (3), 440 (3), 489 (3), 499 (2). • Electives recommended: (11 credit hours from communication courses selected in consultation with an adviser). PROGRAM: COMMUNICATION AND THEATRE ARTS COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR (COMMUNICATION EMPHASIS) BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: • WSU Core Requirements (see index). • General Education Requirements (see index). • Psych SS101 (5) in the Social Science area is recommended for Communications and Theatre Arts Composite Teaching majors. • A minor is not required. • Achieve a C or better in major courses. Achieve an overall 3.00 GPA and admission to the Teacher Education Program. (See admission requirements to Teacher Education.) Note: Educ 300 and 400 classes are open only to students admitted to Teacher Education. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). • Students obtaining a Communication and Theatre Arts Composite Teaching major must satisfy the Teacher Education admission and certification requirements. • Support courses required: Educ 365 (3); choose one of the following: ChFam SSI50 (5), Psych 314 (3), ChFam 450 (3).
