Show Child and Family Studies Child and Family Studies General Information Adviser Approved Emphasis Requirements: • Two specific 20 credit hour areas of emphasis -or- • One specific 20 credit hour area of emphasis plus 25 additional credits of adviser approved related courses. Emphasis Options: a. Emphasis in Early Childhood Program Administration and Early Childhood Program Coordination (to be arranged with an adviser). b. Emphasis area credit could be used in obtaining a dual major. Social Work and Business are two recommended majors. c. Other combinations can be arranged with an »uv i»^r. PROGRAM: EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION MAJOR BACHELOR DEGREE The Departments of Child and Family Studies and Teacher Education offer a major in Early Childhood Education with certification for teaching programs which serve children from age three through eight years of age (Pre-K through 3rd grade). Students preparing to teach in preschool programs or kindergarden through 3rd grade graduate with a major in Early Childhood Education. General Requirements: • WSU Core Requirements (see index). • General Education Requirements (see index and Early Childhood Program requirement sheet). • Teacher Education admission and retention standards requirements. • One 15 hour content area specialization; no minor is required. • 183 total hours for the degree, 60 of which must be upper divison education credit (courses numbered 300 or above). Specific Requirements: • Support courses required: Commun HU 102 (3)* or 307 (3) or equivalent; MathEd 203 (3) & 204 (3) & 205 (3); Engl 330 (3); PE 362 (3); one of the following: Educ 343 (3), Art 350 (3), Music 169 (3) or 320 (3), Theatr 460 (3), Dance 364 (3) 2 > • Child and Family Studies courses required: ChfamSS150 (5)*, 250 (4), 260 (3), 262 (3), 350 (3) or Educ 365 (3), Chfam 360 (3), 362 (4), 364 (3), 471 (3), 472 (6) *May be taken in General Education • Professional Education courses required: Educ 300 (2), 303 (3), 304 (3), 306 (4), 307 (3), 315 (3), 339 (3) (taught only Fall & Spring quarters), 365 (3) or Chfam 350 (3), Educ 409 (3), 411 (3), 413 (3), 418 (4), 422 (3), 424 (2), 488 (12); Chfam 498 (2) Admission to Teacher Education is required prior to enrollment in professional education classes. PROGRAM: DUAL CERTIFICATION, EARL Y CHILDHOOD AND ELEMENTARY EDUCATION Combination of these two programs allows students the flexibility to teach kindergarten through sixth grade and increases job potential. Early consultation with an adviser is recommended. Early Childhood majors who desire to obtain an Elementary Education Certification must also complete the following: • Educ 200 (4) Social Studies Concepts for Elementary Teachers • Educ 365 (3) The Exceptional Student (if not already taken) • Additional 15 credit hours of course work in Content Areas of Specialization. • One of the following: Geosc or Geogr PS 135, Chem or Phsx PS 136, Botany or Micro or Zool LSI37. • Additional student teaching of 6 credit hours (length may vary depending on performance and previous placement). Elementary Education majors who desire to obtain an Early Childhood Education Endorsement will complete the following additional 35 hours: • ChFam 250 (4), 260 (3), 262 (3) or Educ 343 (3), Chfam 360 (3), 362 (4), 364 (3), 471 (3), 472 (6). • Additional student teaching of 6 credit hours (length may vary depending on performance and previous placement). Elementary Education majors who have used Child Development as an area of concentration must complete the same number of hours in another content area. PROGRAM: FAMILY STUDIES MAJOR BACHELOR DEGREE To be eligible for acceptance into the Family Studies Program a candidate must: (1) make application to the program; (2) submit all college transcripts; (3) be reviewed and accepted by the Department Committee for Admissions; (4) have a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or better ; and (5) meet all of the requirements listed below. General Requirements: • WSU Core Requirements (see index). • General Education Requirements (see index). • 183 credit hours are required for graduation. • 60 hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 or above). • Family Stuides majors must have a C grade or better in major courses (C- grades are not acceptable). • An overall GPA of 2.00 or C is required. • In lieu of a minor, an emphasis of 20 hours outside the Department of Child and Family Stuides, approved by the department advisor. • A total of 63 hours constitutes this major. Specific Requirements: • This program is designed to support the requirements to become a Certified Family Life educator (CFLE), offered through the National Council on Family Relations. Satisfactory completion of the following is required prior to acceptance into the program: • WSU English Competency requirement (see Core Requirements section of catalog). • WSU Mathematics Competency requirements (see Core Requirements section of the catalog). 90 Quarter hours of university credits (or equivalent). Pre-Professional Core: Chfam 110 (3), 140 (4), 150 (5), 210 (3), 240 (4) 299B (4). Family Studies Professional Core Blocks: Chfam 335 (3), 345 (4), 355 (4), 365 (4), 380 (4), 440 (4), 450 (3), 465 (4), 486 (3), 499B (4); Health 350 (3) Maintenance of Admission in the Family Studies Program: Admission to the Family Studies Program is into a cohort group who proceed through the program in a structured sequence. If a student drops out of a cohort group sequence, for any reason, readmission is required to continue in the Family Studies Program. Code of Ethics: Students enrolled in family studies classes must abide by the National Council on Family Relations Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct as well as the Weber State University Student Code of Ethics. Disciplinary action may be taken by the Family Studies Program Admissions and Retention Committee when a student is found in noncompliance with ethical and/or professional practice standards. Repeat Classes: Students not meeting the minimum grade requirement for an individual Family Studies course may repeat that course one (1) time before being dropped from the Family Studies Program. Advisement: Students must follow the Department of Child and Family Studies advisement procedures. Each Family Studies major will be assigned a faculty advisor. PROGRAM: CHILD AND FAMILY STUDIES DEPARTMENTAL HONORS General Requirements: • Enroll in the General Honors Program and complete 10 hours of General Honors courses (see the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog). • Maintain a grade of B or better in all Child and Family Studies courses. • Fulfill the requirements for the Early Childhood major, Early Childhood Education, or the Family Studies Major. Specific Requirements: The student is free to switch options with the consent of his major adviser. He may change any course selected for honors to non-honors status within the first 5 weeks of the quarter. Option I: • In fulfilling a Child and Family Studies Honors major, complete at least 20 hours of courses on an honor basis. • The above 20 hours should include at least 2 hours in ChFam 486 taken as Child and Family Honors Practicum. • The Student may earn Child and Family Honors credit in any Child and Family Studies course numbered 200 and above. Option II: • In fulfilling a Child and Family Studies Honors major, complete at least 12 hours of courses on a honor basis. • Two of the above hours should include ChFam 486 taken as Child and Family Honors Practicum. • In addition to the above hours, complete at least 6 to 9 hours in Honors 499, Honors Senior Project. The purpose of this stipulation is to provide an opportunity for the student to do a research project of quality to be presented to the faculty or to a professional meeting. Permission from the department chair should be sought before registering in a course for honors credit. A written agreement should be reached with the appropriate professor concerning the work expected for honors credit. (See the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog.) PROGRAM: CHILD DEVELOPMENT MINOR General Requirements: • An overall GPA of 2.00 or C is required.
