A careful study of the social, philosophical, and political ideas of the period is made in order to clarify the meaning and create an enjoyment of the poetry and prose of the period. The course is designed to teach the student to appreciate the literature of the major writers of the period. For this reason, considerable time is spent in discussing the social, philosophical, and economic problems which confronted writers.
