Show 70 the Student Council who were assigned to assist Mr. Mecham in checking out the rules. The rules included student behavior, drinking and smoking, late hours, and entertainment of guests. To be more specific, some of the rules were: 1. No extreme rowdiness or misbehavior in the building 2. No smoking or drinking 3. All boys to be in by 10:30 p.m. Exceptions may be made by the approval of the supervisor. 4. Friends could be entertained in definite areas, usually the reception or recreation room. No girls permitted beyond the reception room. In flagrant cases, where the rules were absolutely disregarded, it was necessary to dismiss some of the boys from the project and from school. The young men who first came to the dormitory under the NYA project were from very needy families. They had little clothing and no money with which to purchase clothing. The NYA attempted to meet their needs by providing them with surplus military clothing from World War I. Coats, pants, overcoats, and shoes were issued to those in need. The shoes had hobnails both on the soles and on the heels, so it was impossible for the fellows to walk on the floors without making a loud noise and without wrecking the floors. It was necessary, therefore, to require all those who wore the hobnails to remove their shoes upon entering the building. This caused some provocation, also hilarity. One of the first things that Mr. Mecham did when the students settled in the dormitory was to have them participate with the regular students in their intramural programs. It |
