72 In making a report in a college faculty meeting on April 22, 1941, Mr. Robert L. Davis stated that it had been decided that related training courses were to be given to the boys and suggested that the instructors be more patient with some of the NYA men because a large percentage of them had not completed high school. He said they needed encouragement and extra help and that if the school did not "pick up" these young people the government would. At the close of the school year Mr. Mecham took a leave of absence from the college. This was necessary in order to comply with military orders that all reserve officers serve one year active duty. With the beginning of the Fall quarter, 1941, more students applied for residency in the dormitory. Many of these young men were regular college students taking a full load at school and not under the NYA program. Mr. Bert Asay was manager of the dorm with Mr. Von Holt, assistant supervisor. Mr. Don C. Sparks, NYA Regional Director, was in charge of the NYA students. In the latter part of September, 1941, there was a severe windstorm in Ogden, and a great deal of destruction was done throughout the city. It appeared that the greatest damage was to the men's newly remodeled dormitory, the former county courthouse. A whole section of the roof was caved in by the falling chimney, and parts of the roof were entirely torn off. Much destruction was caused by broken water pipes
