Show WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1967 THE HIGHLANDER PAGE MEET ae THE 3 SCOTS “3 My Neighborhood (Description) Mugwumps. That’s right, mugwumps, and my neighborhood is swarming with them. Just what is a mugwump? A Mugwump is a small extremely bothersome animal; ninety per cent of my neighbors are mugwumps. Yup. little kids. Oh yes, my neighborhood. A description was my main objective, wasn’t it? There is a road cut right through the middle of my neighborhood, but I guess that goes without saying. The road is asphalt with little bits of gravel imbedded in it—to keep it from getting gooey in the summer, I guess. It doesn’t work too well, though. Another mistake by the city. I remember when the street was just rocks, and it didn’t get gooey then. All the mailboxes were lined up at the top of the street. We paved it so the mailman would bring letters right to our houses. Neither rain, nor snow, nor gloom of night. I guess rocky roads don’t count. The grass in the front of our houses runs right out to the curb. There are no sidewalks. The people must not have wanted them. “I wish our kids wouldn’t play in the streets, it’s dangerous,” they say. Many of the houses on our block have gardens in their back yards. Lush, green, bountiful gardens. The hard-working men of our neighborhood work even harder during the weekends. They plant seeds, fertilize, hoe weeds, and have what they call a good time. “Let’s go fishing, daddy,” one of the mugwumps says. ‘Gotta do this garden work, can’t let it fall behind,” the hard working man says. “Oh,” says the mugwump as his face becomes wet as well Sie eS Sheps Sos S Sy pees Se her aie a “s “Oh.” My neighborhood is typical, average, and normal.
