Show Block Student Hanson Berlioz Hector Overture Benedict and Beatrice - Greg Conductor Bilik H. Jerry M March The overture consists of three movements contrasting comedy and The first movement with its gay romance in an interesting manner. scherzo-like rhythm is of a light nature, in keeping with the subject matter of the story of the opera. The second movement is somewhat slow and sustained, and is of romantic content. The third, an alla-breve allegro is definitely related to the thematic material of the first movement. The characteristic skip downward of a minor sixth with an upward semi-tone resolution is the outstanding figure and is typical of Berlioz. Schinstine Small Tulsa __ Don Gillis In 1956 the state of Oklahoma commissioned composer Don Gillis to write a composition in commemoration of the state centennial. The result was ‘Tulsa’. The opening strain depicts a quiet, slow moving Oklahoma town with the average lazy atmosphere of the typical western country. The tension begins to mount as big promoters move inte town and start spreading rumors about the possibility of the discovery of oil. The music takes on a feeling of excitement and we hear the wheels of machinery and oil drills begin to turn. These effects come from the percussion and brass sections of the band. The excitement in the music grows and grows until finally the gusher comes in with great force.
