Show OUR CONDUCTORS Mrs. Fay Hanson (Mn Memoriam) Many of you brass players have very vivid memories of Mrs. Hanson. She was a tough taskmaster with high standards for her students. The result was many excellent players who enhanced the quality of the WSC Band. Mrs. Hanson attended Weber State in 1939 and joined the faculty in 1953. Mrs. Hanson was considered one of the leading authorities on brass instruments in the country. She taught at Utah State University, Western State College and Weber State College. At WSC she directed the Brass Choir, the famous Trumpeteers and the brass for the band and orchestra. Mrs. Hanson was in constant demand throughout the country as a brass clinician having appeared in over twenty-five states, including appearances at several MENC conventions. In 1969, she was a guest clinician at the National Trumpet Symposium in Denver, Colorado and for the Hawaiian Music Educators Association in Honolulu, Hawaii. Mrs. Hanson began her career at the age 14 under the expert guidance of her teacher, Hyrum Lammers of Warner Brothers Studios in Los Angeles. At this time, she was also a student of Hebert L. Clarke. She has produced numerous excellent players from her students who now hold responsible positions throughout the country. Her cornet choir and trumpet trios have appeared from coast to coast in concert and on several national TV shows. A new dimension was added to her teaching by a federal grant from the United States Government for research on the physical aspects of trumpet playing illustrated by x-ray photographs. She published her findings. She studied with many brass teachers of national prominence as well at the Universi ty of Washington the University of Michigan (with special appreciation to Dr. William Revelli), Weber State College and the Eastman School of Music. Mrs. Hanson died in October of 1973. Her passing is felt as a deep loss by her students and colleagues, but she has left us with a rich store of knowledge on brass methods and teaching philosop hies |
