Show Foreign Languages Foreign Languages • 340 (5) must be completed prior to commencing student teaching. In addition, candidates must pass a foreign language departmental proficiency examination in each language they plan to teach. • Teaching majors must student-teach in their language for a minimum of one quarter. Majors must also complete at least one quarter's successful study in a second foreign language. • Support course recommended: Anthro SS204 (5). PROGRAM: FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENTAL HONORS General Requirements: • Enroll in General Honors and complete at least 10 hours of General Honors courses (see the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog). • Maintain an overall GPA of 3.3. • Fulfill requirements for departmental or teaching majors in French, German or Spanish. Specific Requirements: • In fulfilling the requirements for a Foreign Language major take at least 15 credit hours on an Honors basis. • Complete a Foreign Language Senior Project. • A student may receive Foreign Language Honors credit in any Foreign Language upper division course. Permission from the department chair should be sought before registering in a course for Honors credit. A written agreement should be reached with the appropriate professor regarding the work expected for Honors credit. (See the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog.) PROGRAM: FOREIGN LANGUAGE MINOR OR TEACHING MINOR (FRENCH, GERMAN, JAPANESE, OR SPANISH) General Requirements: • A grade of C or better in all minor courses. • At least 5 credit hours of foreign language courses numbered above 300 must be completed at Weber State. Specific Requirements: • Prerequisite courses: 101 (5), 102 (5), 103 (5), HU201 (5), HU202 (5) or equivalent preparation. • Minimum of 18 upper division credit hours for minor (23 for teaching minors). • Courses required: HU304 (3), HU305 (3), HU306 (3) plus any 9 upper division hours. • Teaching minors must take 330 (3) and 340 (5). 340 must be completed prior to student teaching. In addition, candidates must pass a foreign language departmental proficiency examination in each language they plan to teach. • 330 should be taken before 340. • Teaching Minors should student-teach in their language for a minimum of one quarter. • Minors must include one literature course taught in the language. ASIAN STUDIES MINOR PROGRAM The Department of Foreign Languages participates in the Asian Studies Minor Program. Students who wish to enroll should indicate their desire to do so with the departmental representative who will help them work out a proper combination of courses to fit their particular needs. (See the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog.) LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES MINOR PROGRAM The Department of Foreign Languages participates in the Latin American Studies Minor Program. Students who wish to enroll should indicate their desire to do so with the departmental representative who will help them work out a proper combination of courses to fit their particular needs. (See the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog.) FOREIGN LANGUAGE COURSES Courses listed here have a common number and description and may be taught in any language (subject to academic and community needs, as well as to the availability of resources). Courses peculiar to French, German and Spanish are listed separately. ALL LANGUAGES 100. Folk Songs (1) Folk songs in the target language. No prerequisite. May be repeated up to three times under different titles. 101,102,103. First Year* (5-5-5) Listening and speaking skills receive primary emphasis, although reading and writing are an integral part of the program. 105. Language Exploration (1-5) A two-week exploration of salient characteristics of language and culture in from one to five different languages. No prerequisites. 110. Conversational Skills for Special Purposes (1-5) Special vocabulary and speaking skills in one quarter, (i.e, nursing, law enforcement, medical, tourism, family language courses, etc.) May be repeated for credit under different titles. HU201, HU202. Second Year* (5-5) Grammar and composition of intermediate level and progressively advanced reading material. 209. Travel and Study Abroad (3) Language, culture and history study offered on location and supervised by faculty of the Department of Foreign Languages. 210. Building Speaking Proficiency (1-3) Building intermediate communication and survival skills in the target language. May be taken twice for credit. 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) In order to provide flexibility and to meet many different needs, a number of specific offerings are possible using this catalog number. When the number is used it will be accompanied by a brief and specific descriptive title. The specific title with the credit authorized for the particular offering will appear on the student transcript. 300. Preparation for Advanced Reading (3)* Reading and critical discussion of primary and secondary literature. HU304, HU305, HU306. Third Year* (3-3-3) Grammar review and an introduction to composition and stylistics. 309. Travel and Study Abroad (3) Language, culture and history study offered on location and supervised by faculty of the Department of Foreign Languages. 310. Third Year Conversation: Current Topics (1-5) Course may be repeated for credit. HU311, HU312, HU313. Survey of Literature (3-3-3) A general view of literary periods movements and social background with representative readings. 330. Phonetics* (3) Analysis and practice of native speaking patterns; techniques of teaching correct pronunciation. 340. Methods of Teaching a Foreign Language (5) Emphasis on practical techniques in teaching foreign languages. HU370. Foreign Literary Masterpieces in Cultural Context (3) No prerequisite. 401. Applied Language Studies (3) Foreign language studies applicable to specific skills. 483. Directed Readings (1-3) Arranged. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. 492.
