Show Zoology Zoology Information EMPHASIS IN URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING This program provides a special emphasis in Urban and Regional Planning for majors in Botany, Engineering, Geography, Geology, Microbiology, Political Science, Sociology, Zoology, and related fields. (See the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog.) ZOOLOGY COURSES - ZOOL m 112. Elements of Wildlife Management (1) Introduction to problems and methods of wildlife management. NS160. General Zoology (5) Su, A, W, S Introduction to the study of animals emphasizing principles and reviewing characteristics of the various groups. Prerequisite for all Zoology major classes except NS201, 202 and NS230. Five lectures a week. NS201. Human Physiology (5) Su,A, W,S Functional and anatomical consideration of the human body. Recommended for all curricula for which basic understanding of the body functions is required. Four lectures and one 3-hour lab a week. 202. Human Anatomy (4) Su,S Structure of the human body systems. Three lectures and one 3- hour lab a week. NS211. Invertebrate Zoology (5) A, W, S Comparative biology of non-vertebrate animals. Three lectures and two 3-hour labs a week. NS212. Vertebrate Zoology (5) A, W, S Natural history, structure, function and evolutionary relationships are emphasized. Four lectures and one 3-hour lab a week. NS230. Heredity (5) A, W, S Inheritance in living things with emphasis on humans. A general education course for non-biological science majors. Five lectures a week. 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) In order to provide flexibility and to meet many different needs, a number of specific offerings are possible using this catalog number. When the number is used it will be accompanied by a brief and specific descriptive title. The specific title with the credit authorized for the particular offering will appear on the student transcript. 299. Sophomore Seminar (1) This seminar consists of faculty presentations on their research and other scholarly pursuits. 330. Genetics (5) W,S Principles and concepts of modem genetics. A course for biological science majors. Three lectures and two 3-hour labs a week. Prerequisites: Zool NS211 and NS212 or 405, or approval of instructor. Algebra and organic chemistry strongly recommended. 332. Cytology (4) Intracellular morphology and subcellular organization of the cell. Two lectures and two 3-hour labs a week. Prerequisites: Zool NS211 and NS212 or 405, or approval of instructor. Chem 311 series recommended. 340. Library Research Methods in Biology (3) W A practical introduction to the kinds of biological materials in academic libraries and how to find, use and interpret information in these sources. Prerequisite: English 112. 347. Zoogeography (3) A The study of factors controlling the distribution of animals with emphasis on the vertebrates. Three lectures a week. Zool NS211 and NS212 or 405, or approval of instructor. 372. Organic Evolution (4) W The patterns and processes involved in changes in natural populations. Four lectures a week. Prerequisites: Zool NS21 land NS212 or 405, or approval of instructor. 373. Population Genetics and Ecology (3) S Principles of Genetics and Ecology at the population level. Three lectures a week. Prerequisite: Zool NS211 and NS212 or 405; Zool NS230 or 330; or approval of the instructor. NS380. History of the Life Sciences (3) Personalities, science and ideas in the development of biology. Three lectures a week. 381. Teaching Methods in the Life Sciences (4) A Acquaintance with the various methods and curriculum developments of high school biology. Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy (5) W Structure of representative types. Two lectures and three 3-hour labs a week. Zool NS160 or equivalent. 410. Vertebrate Embryology (5) 5 Development of representative types. Three lectures and two 3- hour labs a week. Prerequisites: Zool NS211 and NS212 or 405, or approval of instructor. 412. Histology (5) A The study of vertebrate tissues, identification and association with the main organs emphasized. Three lectures and two 3-hour labs a week. Prerequisite: Zool NS211 and NS212 or 405, or approval of instructor. 420. Cell Physiology (5) S Metabolic activities of organisms on cellular level. Three lectures and two 3-hour labs a week. Prerequisite: A minimum of one year in Chemistry. Zool NS211 and NS212 or 405, or approval of instructor. 421,422. Mammalian Physiology (5-5) A, W A two-quarter study of vertebrate physiological processes on the organ level. Three lectures and two 3-hour labs a week. Prerequisites: Zool NS211 and NS212 or 405, or approval of instructor. A minimum of one year of Chemistry (preferably 311 series). Zool 422 cannot be taken without Zool 421. 423. Endocrinology (5) S The study of the function of neural and hormonal control in animals, with emphasis on the human organism. Four lectures and one 3-hour lab a week. Prerequisite: Zool NS211 and NS212 or 405 and Zool 420 or 421, or approval of instructor. 425. Radiation Biology (4) W Training in the study of harmful effects of radiation and practical applications of radioactive tracer techniques to biological problems. Prerequisites: Zool NS211 and NS212 or 405, or approval of instructor, and beginning courses in Chemistry and Physics. Two lectures and two 3-hour labs a week. 435. Animal Behavior (4) 5 Principles and concepts of animal behavior emphasizing evolution of behavior and the role of behavior in adaptations of animals to their environment. Three lectures and one 3-hour lab a week. Prerequisites: Zool NS211 and NS212 or 405, or approval of instructor. 440. General Ecology (4) Su The physical and biological factors which influence living things. Three lectures and one lab or field trip a week. Zool NS211 and NS212 or 405, or approval of instructor. Writing intensive course. 445. Animal Ecology (4) S Principles and concepts of the interrelations of animals and their environment. Three lectures and one 3-hour lab or field trip a week. Wildlife Ecology (4) A Principles of wildlife ecology and the techniques of wildlife population analysis and manipulation. Three lectures and one 3-hour lab or field trip a week. Aquatic Ecology (4) A Study of the physical and biological interactions of freshwater and marine ecosystems. Three lectures and one 3-hour lab or field trip a week. Prerequisites: Zool NS211 and NS212 or 405, or approval of instructor. Writing intensive course. 450. Parasitology (5) W Internal parasites of man and domestic animals, their structure and biology. Medical Entomology (4) W The bionomics and control of arthropods affecting the health of man. Three lectures and one 3-hour lab a week. Prerequisites: Zool NS211 and NS212 or 405, or by approval of instructor. 460. Protozoology (5) Structure, taxonomy and biology of the one-celled animals. Three lectures and two 3-hour labs a week. Prerequisite: Zool NS211 and NS212 or 405, or approval of instructor. 464. Entomology (4) A Classification and biology of insects as well as their economic importance. Three lectures and one 3-hour lab a week. Prerequisite: Zool NS211 and NS212 or 405, or approval of instructor. 465. Ichthyology (4) W Ecology and biology of fishes with emphasis on the population and community ecology of freshwater forms. Field trips required. Three lectures and one 3-hour lab a week. Prerequisite: Zool NS211 and NS212 or 405, or by approval of instructor. 466. Herpetology (4) S Structure, classification, and biological relationships of amphibians and reptiles. Three lectures and one 3-hour lab a week. Prerequisite: Zool NS211 and NS212 or 405, or by approval of instructor. 467. Ornithology (4) 5 The biology of birds including form, function, behavior and ecology. Lab emphasizes identification of Utah species. Three lectures and one 3-hour lab or a field trip each week. Prerequisite: Zool NS211 and NS212 or 405, or approval of instructor. 468. Mammalogy (5) A An introduction to the mammals with special reference to species found in Utah. Four lectures and one 3-hour lab or field trip a week. Prerequisite: Zool NS211 and NS212 or 405, or approval of instructor. 474. Vertebrate Phylogeny (3) An introduction to some possible lines of descent for the major vertebrate groups. Three lectures a week. Prerequisite: Zool NS211 and NS212 or 405, or approval of instructor. 475. Man and the Primates (3) W An introduction to fossil as well as living primates with an emphasis on possible evolutionary relationships. Three lectures a week.
